Martlets Defeat AOF

The Fourth Boys team traveled through the Farmington Valley on a perfect fall day to face the Avon Old Farms Winged Beavers in the first of four matchups this season. From the outset, it was clear this would be an evenly matched game, and the Martlets were ready to play a full seventy minutes of team soccer from the first whistle. Nolan Baum ‘30 started the scoring for Westminster in the first half before the Winged Beavers responded with two goals, one off of a penalty kick rebound after an impressive save by Tyler Hassett ‘30. Jaewoo Chung ‘30 evened the score for the Martlets, drilling home a beautiful cross from Marco Campos ‘30. Minutes later, Marco Campos ‘30 added a goal of his own after working hard to get his foot on a loose ball in the box. The Martlets learned from the Suffield game, tightening up their defense in the game's final minutes and holding onto the lead. Mason Mundle ‘30 had his best game of the season, playing smart and aggressive defense. Max Matthews ‘30 and Cooper Thompson ‘30 were aggressive and fast in the midfield, creating scoring opportunities and helping on defense. RJ Hall ‘30 was productive and aggressive at center striker, creating lots of scoring opportunities, and Bryce Stephens ‘30 earned the Grit and Grace award for switching positions mid-game and bringing extra effort and intensity at midfield. The coaches are proud of the team’s progress so far and look forward to another great week of practice before Saturday’s road trip to Deerfield.
