Martlets Win in OT

The Martlets continued their away game stretch with a trip to Kent this afternoon. Kent struck first on this warm fall day when they successfully executed an early corner opportunity. Although this early Kent goal gave the lions some momentum, the Martlets were quick to respond when Stella Spitz ‘27 received a pass from Lily O’Callaghan ‘28 in the circle and beat the goalkeeper to tie the game! The remainder of the quarter was back and fourth and the score stayed even at one apiece. The second quarter proved to be more of the same back and fourth, but eventually Kent was able to break the tie and take the 2-1 lead with 4 minutes left in the half. The Martlets used the break to regroup and get ready for the remaining two quarters. The Martlets started the third quarter with a strong sense of urgency, but it wasn’t until a corner opportunity that the Martlets received as the clock hit zero in the third quarter that they were able to execute. Stella Spitz ‘27 received the ball and sent it over to Catherine Knauf ‘27 who swept it through traffic to tie the game! The late third quarter goal gave the Martlets a spark heading into the final fifteen minutes. The remaining quarter was back and forth as each team had their opportunities but sixty minutes of play was not enough. The Martlets, a team that has now seen overtime three times to start the season, was excited to have another opportunity to secure a win. Just a few minutes into extra time, Stella Spitz ‘27 took a shot from the top of the circle and Lizzie Filippetti ‘28 was in great possession in front of the net. Filippetti was able to corral the rebound and finish the job to give the Martlets the win! The Martlets look ahead to Friday as they take on Pomfret on the road!

Our Grit & Grace players of the game are Catherine Knauf ‘27 and Lizzie Filippetti ‘28! Both Catherine and Lizzie had vital goals for the Martlets today and their steady, strong play helped the team secure the win.
