Martlets Fall in OT

The Martlets headed to Cambridge, MA for their first away game of the season to take on BB&N on a crisp late September afternoon! In the first quarter both teams were settling in and the play was fairly back and forth as no one was able to crack the scoreboard. Although no score, the Martlets had their chances including an opportunity by Campbell Corbin ‘30 that hit the crossbar- a well deserved opportunity from Corbin who showcased her speed and hustle all game. Following a scoreless first quarter, it was the knights who struck first on a successful offensive corner. As the Martlets headed into halftime down a goal, they regrouped to talk about what they were doing well and what they needed to improve. During the third quarter, the Martlets were on their heels at times, but the strong defensive unit and goaltender Allie Scott ‘29, weathered the push from the Knights. Defensive highlights included multiple impressive saves from Allie Scott and a defensive save right on the goal line, from Kiera Dumas ‘29. Following the strong defensive play, the Martlets were able to make an offensive push of their own, but unfortunately the Knights were able to add one more to the scoreboard during this quarter to increase their lead to two. Despite the deficit, the Martlets knew the two goal comeback was not out of reach. Not long into the final quarter, the Martlets found themselves with an offensive corner. Stella Spitz ‘27 received the ball and sent it flying past the goaltender to cut the lead in half! Assist to Junior Lily O’Callaghan. This goal gave the Martlets the spark they needed and they continued to apply sustained offensive pressure. Pretty quickly, they found themselves with another offensive corner and a chance to tie the game. Stella Spitz once again found the ball on her stick in the circle and was able to capitalize again to even the score! The bench was ecstatic and the Martlets felt the momentum shift! The remaining minutes of the fourth quarter would be an exciting one but neither team was able to break the tie. The Martlets were able to complete the comeback and force overtime. As the extra time began, the Knights came out strong and applied pressure quickly. The quick start resulted in a few offensive corners in a row in which the Martlets did a good job shutting down, but eventually they were able to capitalize and the final score would be 3-2 BB&N. Although a disappointing loss, the Martlets showed great resilience during their fourth quarter comeback. Next, Westminster travels to NMH for another away game on Saturday.

Our Grit & Grace player of the game is captain Stella Spitz! Stella led the way through her compete and no quit effort today.
