Martlets Open Season with Hard-Fought Battle Against Suffield

Westminster opened the 2026 season with a late heartbreak on Saturday, falling 1–0 to neighboring rival Suffield Academy after conceding a goal with just 13 minutes remaining.

After playing to a scoreless draw at halftime, the Martlets came away feeling very good about their performance. Despite being unable to find the back of the net, Westminster created opportunities and competed with confidence and composure throughout the match.

Fifth Former Lochlain O’Donnell '28 was outstanding in goal, coming up with several big saves in the second half to keep the Martlets within striking distance.

In the midfield, sixth formers Luka Misko'27, Garrett Rohrbaugh '27, and Kevin Coronado '27 turned in strong performances, controlling the middle of the field and helping Westminster maintain its rhythm and pressure.

Just two minutes into the second half, sixth former Brady Jachym '27 nearly put Westminster in front, but a Suffield defender made a timely play to get a foot on the ball and prevent the scoring opportunity.

The late stages brought plenty of drama. With five minutes remaining, Misko appeared to have equalized for the Martlets, but the goal was ruled offside by the officials, keeping Suffield in front until the final whistle.

While the result wasn't what Westminster had hoped for, the Martlets can be proud of the way they performed in their season opener. There were plenty of positives to build upon and plenty of reasons to be optimistic as the season moves forward.

A big thank you to the incredible crowd who came out to support the Martlets today! Your energy and support were felt throughout the match.
