Martlets Fall to Bearcats

The Martlets hosted the undefeated Bearcats this afternoon on Michelini Field; the Bearcats returned home with their record intact. Our boys knew the record of their opponent and came ready to battle. For a large portion of the first half the boys fought, although Hotchkiss controlled most of the play. In the 25th minute Sonny Darnowski ‘29 got a hand on a shot from the low left side and deflected it, but the rebound came out to the right side where an uncovered Bearcat directed the ball into the open side of the goal. With only two minutes remaining in the half, Hotchkiss scored on a similar play by carrying the ball down the left side and along the goal line before passing to a player at the six yard box to double their lead.
Hotchkiss added two more goals in the second half: In the 14th minute a pass out to the left wing resulted in a nice shot/goal; in the 25th minute Hotchkiss played a short corner into the center of the box for another score.
While the statistics were lopsided in many ways: final score (0-4), corner kicks (0-7), and scoring opportunities; our Martlets succeeded in causing a dozen offsides calls against Hotchkiss. Although we didn’t generate many scoring chances (Tank Pan ‘29 had a nice shot in the second half that the goalie got a piece of and then ricocheted off the post), our defense and goalies played very well! Our GRIT & Grace players of the game are goalies Sonny Darnowski ‘28 and Max Butensky ‘29. We play our last game of the season next Wednesday when we host Kent School in a rematch of the first game of the season.
