Martlets And Gunn Tie

We took the scenic, seasonal drive out to western CT for a tilt against the Highlanders. A pair of evenly matched teams battled on a gorgeous Halloween afternoon. Unfortunately, due to some communication issues we did not know on which field we were scheduled to play. Once we were able to get to the right location, a quick warm-up led us immediately into the game. The teams traded possessions and chances, but neither team could break into the scoring column during the first half.
Only four minutes into the second half the Martlets scored when Brooks BeVier ‘28 was able to tap in the ball from a nice touch by Tank Pan ‘29 across the front of the goalie. Unfortunately, we gave up the tying goal to FGS within the same minute as right off the restart from midfield the Highlanders raced down their right wing and converted.
One of our challenges this fall has been clearing the ball from inside our own penalty area; this difficulty again resulted in FGS scoring the go-ahead goal in the 13th minute. The Highlander goalie made several nice saves to preserve their lead until late in the game. Finally, with about three minutes remaining in the game Brady Myslik ‘29 fed a nicely paced through ball that Pan was able to run onto and slot the ball by their goalie to tie the game.
The teams were essentially even in corner kicks and neither team was called for being offsides. Our GRIT & Grace of the game is Tank Pan for his overall hustle and two points on the day. For Monday’s practice we will participate in the annual Westminster Martlet Mush on the cross country course. We finish the season with home games each of the next two Wednesdays.
