Morgan Curtis ’24 Shares Her Artistic Journey with AP Art Students
On September 18, Morgan Curtis ’24 returned to Williams Hill to meet with AP® Art & Design students to speak about her experiences at Westminster and as a University of Connecticut undergraduate pursuing a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and drawing and a minor in art history. Morgan’s exhibition, Let’s Just Draw, hung in Armour Academic Center’s Baxter Gallery and featured artwork from her childhood, high school portfolio, and recent work.
Facilitated by the Schuster Family Chair for Visual and Performing Arts, Kerry Kendall, AP students viewed Morgan’s digital student portfolio and learned about her mindset when she created specific pieces for class assignments as well as the media, subjects, and techniques she explored while at Westminster. After some questions from students, Morgan spoke more extensively about her journey as an artist, comparing her past artistic experiences at Westminster to her current studio practice and academic challenges at UConn.
In her artist’s statement for the exhibition, Morgan wrote that her most recent painting series uses family photographs taken on a 2005 Canon PowerShot camera as references. “I focused heavily on that human element in the paintings I produced this summer. I loved the way the old Canon camera made sunlight so bright it washed parts of the image away. Each blown-out line, color switch, and moment of texture showcases something only a human can create. I returned to loving my work the way I did when I was younger. I felt it was fitting to honor finding my voice again by creating the 10 pieces shown today.”
“When I had Morgan as a student, she was always drawing, always painting,” said Kerry Kendall. “She put her time in, she practiced, and it’s wonderful to have her on campus to share what she is creating today with our students.”
