  • Hockey - Third Boys'

    2019 - 2020
    Head Coach: Shawn Desjardins

Westminster School plays a very competitive varsity ice hockey schedule in arguably the best high school hockey league in the country, known as the Housatonic Conference. The ultra-competitive nature of the league, coupled with the high quality of Westminster’s games and players, attracts coaches from Division I and Division III colleges as well as professional scouts.

Westminster was the Founders League Champion four times, most recently in 2019 and has advanced to the semifinals and finals of the New England Championship as recently as 2016. Out of 62 New England Prep programs, Westminster is consistently in the top 16 teams that compete for a New England Championship at season’s end.

The Martlets competed for a New England Championship in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. In 2011, Westminster was crowned the New England Large School Champion. The team is fortunate to play in the Flood Marr Holiday Tournament and has won the tournament four times since entering it, winning it most recently in 2011 and 2015.

The Westminster hockey program focuses on each of the school’s four core values, with a priority placed on character and character development. Graduates of Westminster have gone on to do wonderful things in numerous fields. We do not boast so much about their accomplishments as we do about the kind of people they are. Our graduates have distinguished themselves as student-athletes, leaders and above all else, good, responsible citizens.

Graduates from Westminster and the ice hockey program have gone on to play at a variety of top schools such as Yale University, Princeton University, Dartmouth College, the University of New Hampshire, St. Lawrence University, the U.S. Military Academy, the Air Force Academy, Boston College, the University of Vermont, Colgate, Holy Cross, Middlebury College, Bowdoin College, Amherst College, Trinity College, Connecticut College and Wesleyan University. Several alumni have been drafted by NHL teams and have gone on to play professionally. In the 2007 NHL draft, a Westminster alumnus was drafted 35th overall by the Boston Bruins, and in the 2008 draft, the Chicago Blackhawks took another former Westminster player.
