Soccer - Varsity Boys'
2011 - 2012Head Coach: Arturo Daniel SolísVarsity Boys’ Soccer has been known for its controlled style of play and perennial competitiveness, frequently earning ranking among the top 20 teams in New England. The Varsity team competes annually for the Founders League title, playing a 18-game schedule against Founders League opponents and other local independent prep schools. The team also competes in a major collegiate showcase tournament early in the season. The team has enjoyed trips overseas to England and Scotland for preseason and most recently Spain in the summer of 2022.
The Martlets play home games on one of the many fine fields that comprise Westminster’s 35 acres of playing fields, as well as on Hovey Field, a synthetic turf field with lights — one of the most beautiful facilities in New England.Coach Jay Keough took over as head coach of Varsity Boys’ Soccer in 2014, after coaching Junior Varsity Boys’ Soccer for three years. Coach Keough has had a long career in NEPSAC soccer. In his seven years as head coach at Hebron Academy, he won the MAISAD Conference twice and had numerous New England playoff appearances including a Championship game. Following Hebron, coach Keough moved to Pomfret School where he helped the varsity soccer program for two years, including one appearance in the New England playoffs.As a collegiate athlete at Salve Regina University, coach Keough competed as a three-sport letter-winner in soccer, ice hockey and lacrosse. During his senior season, the Salve soccer team qualified for the Division III NCAA Tournament. Coach Keough holds an NSCAA Level 1 Goalkeeping diploma as well as a U.S. Soccer Level F coaching license. At Westminster, he works in admissions and also coaches hockey and lacrosse. He lives on campus with his wife and two sons.Charlie Griffith is assistant coach of Varsity Boys’ Soccer. He was named Connecticut Assistant Coach of the year in 2014. Coach Griffith has more than two decades of experience coaching soccer in the NEPSAC league. He also coaches ice hockey and lives on campus with his wife and has three children.Westminster’s Soccer program has a strong track record of nurturing players who go on to participate at both the Division I and the Division III levels at schools such as Bowdoin, Colby, Colgate, Holy Cross, Maryland, Middlebury, Trinity, Denison and Yale.
