Winter Sports Highlights for 2.19.18

Basketball - First Girls'
Feb. 12: Basketball - First Girls’ 53 vs Capital Prep 24
This game’s outcome was never in doubt — Westminster would win. Every player scored at least two baskets. Bethany Winters ’20, Emma Alpaugh ’18 and Paige Phillips ’20 combined for 37 points.

Feb. 14: Basketball - First Girls’ 45 vs Kent School 61
It was close through the first half (Westminster was down six at the intermission) and early on in the second half, but too many turnovers, too many offensive rebounds allowed, and too many missed open shots added up to a defeat. Paige Phillips '20 had a great second half and led the way with 22 points, while Ridgely Green ’20 came back from illness to chip in eight.

Feb. 17: Basketball - First Girls’ 40 vs Suffield Academy 68
Westminster was down big at halftime to a strong Suffield squad 23-52. The Tigers generously called off their press in the second half, and the Martlets managed to play them pretty evenly the rest of the way. Sixth Form captain Emma Alpaugh '18, playing in her final home game, combined with Paige Phillips '20 to lead the team in scoring, and Laura Velez '20 had perhaps her best all-around game.

Feb. 14: Basketball - First Boys’ 53 vs Berkshire School 70

Feb. 16: Basketball - First Boys’ 56 vs Loomis Chaffee 86

Feb. 17: Basketball - First Boys’ 80 vs Kent School 50
The Martlets played one of their best games of the season against a solid Kent team. The first minutes of the first half of the game were close and both teams were competing. However, the Martlets ramped up the defensive pressure and started to pull away late in the first half. In the second half, Westminster continued to pull away with the lead. It was the first time ever in Coach David Pringle's tenure as coach that everyone on the team scored in a game. Westminster had four players in double figures. Chris Robinson '20 led the charge with 18 points; Fritz Gale '18 had 17 points; Max Brigham '18 had 16 points and Tavian Montanez '21 chipped in with 14 of his own points.

Basketball - Second Girls'
Feb. 14: Basketball - Second Girls’ 24 vs Kent School 18
The team faced a quick Kent squad on Feb. 14. The Martlets jumped out to an early lead that they would hold onto for the duration of the game. Several girls were able to sink some shots from outside, keeping the team comfortably in the lead. After adjusting defensive formation, the girls were able to successfully hold off Kent's quick offensive system. Sophia Gasser '18 led the team with great defensive pressure and 13 points on offense. The team looks to host Suffield on Saturday during Senior Day for the team’s two Sixth Formers, Gasser and Becca Gavel '18.

Feb. 17: Basketball - Second Girls’ 18 vs Suffield Academy 25
The team took on a well-coached and physical Suffield team on Feb. 17. For almost the entire game, the Martlets had to fend off a tough Suffield press. Though the team got off to a slow start, eventually it was able to generate some offense and put up nine points in the first half. However, Suffield had most of the offensive possession and scored 21 points in the first half. The second half proved to be a different story. The team played excellent defense, completely shutting down Suffield's offensive chances by getting several steals and grabbing rebounds. Although the team wasn’t able to generate enough offense to overcome the large first-half deficit, it dominated the second half scoring nine points to Suffield's four points for a final score of 18-25. Sophia Gasser '18 and Alisa Toner '21 both scored five points for the team while Allison Kijanka '20 and Gabby Nemarich '20 both added four points.

Basketball - Second Boys'
Feb. 14: Basketball - Second Boys’ 30 vs Berkshire School 40

Feb. 17: Basketball - Second Boys’ 41 vs Kent School 31
Westminster and Kent battled in a good game on Williams Hill. Ultimately, it was a 12-0 run in the first half that put the game away for Westminster. Riley Wood '19 led all scorers with 15 points. Wood also played great defense and caused scoring chances for his teammates. Henry Mitrano '19 added 10 points and Lukas Dudzik '19 added eight. The Loins drew close late in the game, but four consecutive free throws by Porter Girty '18 sealed the victory. Harry Stevenson '20 had his best game of the year with five rebounds and three steals.

Basketball - Third Boys'
Feb. 14: Basketball - Third Boys’ 26 vs Avon Old Farms School 48
The boys of Thirds Basketball suited up once again as the White Lightning, striking on an unseasonably warm February afternoon in Avon. The Martlets saw a first half that was reminiscent of their battle at Pomfret, where the boys came out strong defensively and held their opponent tight on the scoreboard. Tunji Osho-Williams '21 had a particularly strong performance on the court with outstanding rebounds and impressive defensive play. As the second half rounded for the White Lightning, the boys of Avon rallied to take the lead and came away with the victory.

Feb. 16: Basketball - Third Boys’ 22 vs Loomis Chaffee 56
Third Boys’ Basketball and Loomis took their tilt Feb. 16 in the gym of Westminster School, dishing the boys with a home-court advantage. A tough first half left the Martlets down 10-31, and they came our strongest with just six minutes remaining in the second half of play. Outstanding offensive combinations by Bear “The Bear” Lockshin ‘19 were matched with courtside decorum by Roman Mitchell ‘20.

Feb. 17: Basketball - Third Boys’ 35 vs Rumsey Hall School 45
In the closest match-up for the White Lightning since the showdown at Pomfret, the Martlets took to Washington, Connecticut for another crack at the courts. Things heated up in the first half as Tunji Osho-Williams '21 again had an outstanding performance, not to mention outstanding offensive fortitude by Hunter "Strawberry Blond" Hoogkamp '21 and Max "Instagram Specialist" Brownback '21. In the second half, the Martlets closed the gap and found themselves mere points away from victory, rousing their energy and spirit for the final minutes of the game with a solid full-court press.

Hockey - First Girls'
Feb. 14: Hockey - First Girls’ 3 vs Taft School 1
Westminster bounced back from a tough loss against Nobles with a strong victory over Taft at Jackson rink. From the drop of the puck Westminster was buzzing and creating many offensive chances. Finally, at the end of the first period, Sixth Form defenseman Emma Lange '18 found the back of the net with help from Megan Rittenhouse '20 and Jenny Guider '20. Taft attempted to bounce back, but the disciplined and technically sound play from the Martlets could not be topped. Jill Parsons '19 gave Westminster more comfort with a beautiful end-to-end rush that finished with a top-shelf goal off a breakout pass from Lange. Another highlight reel goal for Westminster came when Fifth Form defenseman Hannah Carbone '19 scored her first-ever Westminster goal. Carbone snuck down to the back door on the power play and buried home a rebound to make the score 3-0. Taft managed to squeak one late third-period goal by goalie Amanda Busky '21 who was otherwise rock solid.

Feb. 17: Hockey - First Girls’ 5 vs Berkshire School 3
After honoring head coach David Pope for his 17 years of service to the program and Westminster Sixth Formers, the Martlets got off to a strong start against Berkshire. Jenny Guider '20 started off the scoring by crashing the net hard after passes from Megan Rittenhouse '20 and Lilly Holmes '18. Holmes netted the next one shortly after with help from Ashlee White '18 and Abby Munger '20. Rittenhouse had Westminster's next three goals with help from White, Guider and Holmes. Rittenhouse and Holmes both had four points on the night and all of the Sixth Formers played well — Rosy Sieglaff '18, Hannah Stone '18, Emma Lange '18, White and Holmes. Although Sixth Former Katie Neilsen '18 was not able to play due to injury, she still supported her teammates on the bench the entire game.

Hockey - First Boys'
Feb. 12: Hockey - First Boys’ 4 vs Hotchkiss School 2
In a makeup from last week, the Martlets hosted the Bearcats from Hotchkiss in their third game in four days. Westminster was slow out of the gate, but the boys were able to pull themselves together to carry the play in the final two periods. Hotchkiss tried to bottleneck the ice, but the Martlets used their speed and skill to evade the trap. A goal with 30 seconds left in the first period off a blown coverage put the Bearcats ahead one after the first period. In the second, Westminster played with more life, and took control of the tempo. Unfortunately, Hotchkiss pulled ahead 2-0 halfway through the second period. The Martlets finally broke through early in the third when Iggy Belov ‘20 found Ryan Doolin ‘18 streaking toward the net. Doolin redirected the puck over the shoulder of the tender to cut the Bearcat lead to one. With just under 10 minutes to play, Patrick Dawson ‘18 picked off an errant pass just inside the Bearcat blueline and snapped a beauty past the Hotchkiss tender to tie the game at two. Jordie McKenna ‘19 also put one past the goalie after a ferocious shift in the Bearcat zone. The score was 3-2 Westminster. Dawson scored again on an empty net to seal the game and cap a great comeback. Shots ended up at 51-24 in Westminster’s favor and Ian Shane ’20 played well, making big saves late to keep his team in the game.

Feb. 14: Hockey - First Boys’ 2 vs Loomis Chaffee 3

Feb. 17: Hockey - First Boys’ 6 vs Berkshire School 8
Following the alumni game at Jackson rink, Berkshire and Westminster faced off in what turned out to be a run-and-gun shootout with a frenzied pace. Westminster would strike first when Jagger LeClair ‘18 found the back of the net by getting to the paint and banging home a centering feed. Berkshire answered with three goals making it 3-1 by the first few minutes of the second period. Defense was limited on both sides of the puck, and both teams were able to get to the net consistently. Max Torrez ‘18 and Jake Monroe ‘20 each netted one to make the game 3-3 midway in the second, but Berkshire would score three more before the third. Tasso Housakos ‘18 netted one late in the second to make the score 6-4 at the end of the second period. The scoring didn’t stop, and Berkshire would make the game 7-4 before the Martlets stormed back. Late in the 3rd with the goalie pulled on the power play, Tasso Housakos ‘18 scored, and he also scored another to make the game 7-6 Berkshire with just over a minute to play. The game was frantic, as you can probably glean from this write-up, and Berkshire scored its final goal with under a minute left off a fumbled puck deep in the Martlet zone. With 14 goals on the day, it was the highest total of the year for Westminster.

Hockey - Second Girls
Feb. 16: Hockey - Second Girls’ 0 vs Northern Lights 2

Hockey - Second Boys'
Feb. 14: Hockey - Second Boys’ 9 vs Loomis Chaffee 2
Second Boys' Hockey defeated Loomis 9-2 in the season rematch at home. After seeing the visiting Pelicans score first on a power play in the opening minutes of the game, the Martlets started to wake up and scored nine unanswered goals — three goals in each period. Goal scorers in the first period were Wyatt Pastor '20, Brett Daubert '20 and Steve Bray '18. Those earning assists include Pastor (two), Daubert, Bray and Peter Hall '18. In the middle frame, Daubert, Hunter Johnson '21 and Quinn Armstrong '20 dented the twine while Pastor, Bray and Peyton Knauf '19 received assists. In the final period, Knauf, Carson Roth '19 and Josh Cosentino '18 found the back of the net and Pastor, Bray, Knauf and Will Rizzo '21 earned assists. Congrats to Johnson and Cosentino for scoring their first Second Team goals of their Westminster careers. Martlet goalie, Will Scott ’20 had 15 saves on the afternoon. The team played well at times but still can improve in several aspects of the game as it enters the final week of the season.

Feb. 17: Hockey - Second Boys’ 2 vs Berkshire School 1
Second Boys' took their game to Massachusetts to take on the Berkshire Bears. In a low scoring, sloppy game, the Martlets survived a 2-1 win. All the scoring came in the first period. Westminster got the initial goal when defenseman Peyton Knauf '19 battled for the puck down the wall in the Bears end and sent a nifty pass to Jack Murdock '19 who was camped out in a soft spot in the high slot. Murdock's first goal of the season, a quick wrister from the slot, couldn't have come at a better time in that his brother, Patrick, played on the opposing team. On an unfortunate personal mix-up when Westminster got caught with too few players on the ice, Berkshire countered with a goal to tie the score. However, late in the period Wyatt Pastor '20 carried a Quinn Armstrong '20 neutral ice pass and roofed one over the Berkshire goalie to make the score 2-1. Despite some chances to extend the lead in the final two periods, the score didn't change and the game came down to a nerve-wracking last five minutes of play. The visitors didn't respond well to the hosts' rough style of play and found themselves defending two five on three situations in the closing few minutes. Both Carson Roth '19 and Alec Paro '19 did a terrific job handling this difficult man-down situation. Along with steady play from captain Peter Hall '18, Knauf and netminder Will Scott '20, the Martlets escaped Bear country with a one-goal win. Sadly, it was a less-than-satisfying victory because the team took a step backwards in many of the areas it had shown gradual improvement — discipline, structure, pass completion and overall team play.

Hockey - Third Boys'
Feb. 14: Hockey - Third Boys’ 0 vs Avon Old Farms School 8

Feb. 15: Hockey - Third Boys’ 5 vs Upland Country Day School 1
With a hybrid team combing players from both the Third and Second teams, the Martlets prevailed over a speedy and skilled Upland squad 5-1. Scoring was spread out among five different players, and Ben Ferrell '21 was steady in net.

Feb. 17: Hockey - Third Boys’ 0 vs Berkshire School 3
Down by two goals with 1:45 remaining, the Martlets tried to rally with an extra attacker but still came up short in this one as Berkshire punctuated the game with a final empty net tally. The game was a close one from the beginning although both teams struggled to find energy and offensive mojo on Berskhire's Olympic-sized sheet. Westminster enjoyed a half a dozen or so good scoring opportunities, but it just wasn't able to crack Berkshire's steady tender.

Squash - First Girls'
Feb. 14: Squash - First Girls’ 6 vs Kent School 1

Feb. 16: Squash - First Girls’ 6 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 1
The girls stayed on a roll with a 6-1 home win over Kingswood. The bottom of the ladder was particularly dominant, as was #1 Valeria Osorio '19, who ran her season record to 14-6 with a 3-0 win.

Feb. 17: Squash - First Boys’ 3 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 4
The Martlets knew this would be another close match. It was. Choate took an early lead, winning at #2, #4 and #6. Although it was 0-3, Andrew Doucette's ’18 match was very close. Connor Seeley '18 took a game and played well but came up short as well. Khalil Walker '19 took his opponent to five games and ended up losing 2-3 and 40 points to 41. It can't get much closer. Chanler Miller '18 won in three games, celebrating his new position on the ladder with his third victory in a row. Aly Tolba '18 won again, extending his streak from last season. Nate Swift '19 played spirited, intense squash, showing bursts of speed and touch. He had two game points in the third game but couldn't convert. With his loss the score stood 2-4 with Sean Ryan '18 still on court. Ryan split the first two games and hung on in the third game for a tiebreaker win. His energy depleted, Ryan let the fourth game get away. Before the fifth game he wondered what he'd done wrong. Coach Peter Doucette said nothing; he just had to get back in front now that he had his wind back. With all of the lower teams watching, Ryan showed the whole gallery what Grit and Grace really means. Down match point against a player who seemed to hit delicate drops from anywhere in the court, Ryan laid out to pick up a low ball on the right wall. He lay on the floor without his racquet and his opponent hit a drop to the left wall that stayed up. Somehow Ryan rose and got that one back too. After a few more spectacular gets, Ryan finished the point and then won two more and threw his racquet down again, this time in euphoria. The gallery erupted in cheers. Final team score 3-4, but Ryan made both teams feel like winners with his fabulous display.

Squash - Second Girls'
Feb. 14: Squash - Second Girls’ 7 vs Kent School 0
Westminster visited Kent on Valentine's Day and left with a convincing 7-0 win. Georgia Swank '19, Eve Cathcart '20, Annabel Bradley'19 and Blake Cote '19 led the Martlets with 3-0 wins at numbers 1-4. With the victory, Westminster improved to 6-6 on the season.

Feb. 16: Squash - Second Girls’ 7 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 0
Westminster did not drop a game in this Feb. 16 matchup against neighboring Kingswood-Oxford School. Olivia Zhang '20 surrendered only four points in her victory while Elaina Comia '19 gave up seven points, and Anna Veber ’21 eight in 3-0 wins. Maddie Dwyer '18 was dominant at #4 in her win.

Feb. 17: Squash - Second Girls’ 7 vs Miss Porter's School 0
Westminster surged to its fourth consecutive 7-0 win after defeating a solid Miss Porter's School squad. Georgia Swank '19 led the team with her 3-2 win in which she slammed the door on her opponent in the fifth, 11-3, thus preserving the shutout for the Martlets. Eve Cathcart '20 dropped the first set against her talented lefty opponent before prevailing 3-1. In exhibition play, Hannah Kaye '19 out lasted her opponent 3-2 with a hard fought win in the fifth, 11-9, and Elaina Comia '19 gave up only a few points in her 3-0 win. Annabel Bradley '19, Maddie Dwyer '18, Olivia Zhang '20 all won in straight sets, and Daniela Mays-Sánchez '20 also finished her match well in a 3-1 win.

Squash - Second Boys'
Feb. 14: Squash - Second Boys’ 5 vs Loomis Chaffee 3
Coach Michael Cervas knew going in that the match against Loomis Chaffe would be a close one (comparative records were a good indication). And indeed, the Martlets lost three of the top four matches but won all four of the bottom matches to claim a 5-3 victory over the Pelicans. Ethan Na '19 won a five-game match at #3 by rebounding from a 1-2 deficit to win the final two games 11-2 and 11-8. That win turned out to be the decisive victory for the black and gold. Travis Paulsen '20 at #5 also had a good day, losing 6-11 in a listless first game, but then fighting tenaciously to win 13-11, 11-7 and 11-8. The "nail" however goes once again to James Manderlink '21 who controlled every part of his match and who surrendered only a total of nine points.

Feb. 16: Squash - Second Boys’ 0 vs Eaglebrook School 8
The Martlets and the boys from Eaglebrook have had many hotly contested matches over the past eight years. Unfortunately, the Feb. 16 match was not one of them. Eaglebrook has its strongest team in about a decade, and the home team controlled this match from start to finish, winning 24 out of the 25 games played. The lone bright spot for the black and gold was Scott Lee '20 who played his best squash of the year so far. Lee won his first game 11-3, lost the second game 4-11, and then rallied from a 5-10 deficit in the third game to take an 11-10 lead before falling 11-13. Despite giving it his best, Lee lost the fourth game 4-11. Nevertheless, Lee's 30 points was three times more than any other Martlet managed to win.

Feb. 17: Squash - Second Boys’ 2 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 7
In a very entertaining match, the Martlets lost to a good Choate team by the score of 2-7. That score is a little deceiving, however, since five of the nine matches went to five games. Unfortunately, Westminster won only one of those matches. There were two hard-fought four-game matches as well (Choate won one and Westminster won the other). Vincent Wang '19 was the only Martlet to pull out a victory in a five-game match, coming back from a 6-10 deficit in the deciding game to win it 12-10.

Squash - Third Boys'
Feb. 16: Squash - Third Boys’ 1 vs Eaglebrook School 8
Westminster traveled up north to take on a talented and tenacious Eaglebrook squad. Although they played valiantly, the Martlets could only come away with a single win. That victory belonged to Memo Tejapaibul '20, who won his match in a five-game thriller.

Feb. 17: Squash - Third Boys’ 7 vs Salisbury School 1

Feb. 17: Swimming/Diving - First Girls’ 27 vs Miss Porter's School 75
Feb. 17: Swimming/Diving - First Girls’ 28 vs Hopkins School 74
The Martlets traveled to Farmington Feb. 17 for the culmination of the dual meet season, taking on talented teams from Miss Porter's and Hopkins. The girls came away with some solid swims and several best times but were outpaced by their opponents in the double-dual contest. Alex Lin '19 placed third in the 200 Freestyle and second in the 100 Freestyle with two strong swims, and Alex Wolf '19 took third in the 50 Free. Cecilia Raymond '20 finished third in the diving event with her first score over 200. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Angelesia Ma '20, co-captain Liza Lennox '18, Wolf and Lin placed third. Ma took the third spot in the 100 Breaststroke with a strong swim. The team of Katherine Ashe '21, Lennox, Wolf and Lin also finished — you guessed it — third in the meet's final event, the 400 Freestyle Relay. Other Martlets with notable performances and best times included Michelle Wu '21 (100 Fly, 500 Free), Siena Holowesko '21 (50 Free, 100 Breast), Simonne Ponce '21 (200 Free, 100 Back) and Mary Su '18 (100 Fly).

Swimming/Diving - First Boys'
Feb. 14: Swimming/Diving - First Boys’ 78 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 102
The boys saw their first action since Jan. 27, and they were eager to test their mettle and showcase their progress from their training trip to Florida over long weekend. The meet began with a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay by Hudson Stedman '21, Eddie Shin '21, co-captain Matt Norris '19 and Liam Seeley '20. Co-captain Albert Gao '18 took second in the 200 Freestyle, and Norris took second in the 200 IM with his season-best time, while Stedman took fourth with a five second drop in his best time. Seeley took third in the 50 Free (best time) and Hayden Cathcart '18 took second in the diving. After a brief ceremony honoring the career contributions of Sixth Formers Cathcart, Gao and co-captain Teagan Stedman '18, Norris took the win in the 100 Fly. Teagan Stedman took fourth in the 100 Freestyle with his lifetime best, and Gao and Kieran Haug '21 placed 1-2 in the 500 Free, both with personal best times. Feb. 17: Swimming/Diving - First Boys’ 45 vs Avon Old Farms School 57
Feb. 17: Swimming/Diving - First Boys’ 32 vs Hopkins School 69
The Martlets traveled to Miss Porter’s Feb. 17 and faced strong teams from Avon Old Farms and Hopkins, losing a double-dual but putting up some fast times throughout the afternoon. The only two Westminster wins came from Layton Harmon '21 in the 50 Free, dropping a full second of his best time to outpace his opponents; and co-captain Matt Norris '19, who took the top spot in the 500 Freestyle with his best time of the season. Co-captain Albert Gao '18 took second in the 200 Freestyle, Norris added a third in the 200 IM, and Hayden Cathcart '18 placed third in the diving event his best score of the season.
