Martlets Shutout Suffield

Westminster started off the week with a big 6-0 win on Hovey Field against Suffield Academy. After at the opening minutes saw back and forth play in the midfield, the Martlets found the back of the net when Mckenzie Bloom ’23 corralled a lose ball at the top of the circle and sent it through traffic to the back post where Liv Fernandez ’23 redirected it to the back of the cage. Just 35 seconds later on the following possession, Allysen Whitehead ’25 picked up a rebound at the top of the circle and sent a reverse shot right back to the cage which passed the Suffield keeper for her first Westminster career goal. A minute and a half later, Bloom added one of her own off of a perfectly placed penalty stroke to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of Westminster. Bloom sent a reverse shot to the top left corner in the early minutes of the second quarter and then another similar shot in the third from an assist from Olivia Emerson ‘24 to complete the hat trick and give Westminster a 5-0 lead. The Martlets continued to showcase the passing connections and off-ball movement they have been working on all season, while also making significant improvements in playing patient and disciplined individual defense and recovering hard after each loss of possession. Westminster added one last goal to the contest in the final frame when Hadley Crowther ‘25 capitalized on a rebound during a penalty corner. Ava Lynch ’23 and Margaret Dilks ’24 had several big stops in the Westminster’s defensive end and Cassie Goundrey ‘24 made many key saves for the Martlets in the first three quarters of the game before Hannah Maltby ‘26 secured the shutout for Westminster in the cage for the final 15 minutes. This was a great showing from the Martlets from start to finish and they will get right back to work tomorrow to prepare for a big road contest on Wednesday afternoon at Hotchkiss.
