Spring Sports Highlights for 5.14.18

Baseball - First Boys'
May 7: Baseball - First Boys’ 3 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 2
After two weeks of solid play against some of the top teams in the Founders League, the Martlets broke through for their first league win of the season. The old baseball adage of pitching, defense and timely hitting proved to be the blueprint for a 3-2, extra-inning victory at Osborne Field. Josh Cosentino '18 was outstanding in going the distance on the mound. His effort was supported throughout the game by the tremendous outfield defense of Joseph Patrina '18, Matthew Cosentino '18 and Jackson Schopp '19. After spotting K-O an early 2-0 lead, Westminster tied the score in the third and was able to keep a very strong Wyvern hitting attack at bay through nine innings. Finally, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Cosentino brothers traded places on the base paths for the win. Josh Cosentino doubled into the left-center gap, which was followed by Matthew Cosentino’s game-winner to the same spot.

Elton Paintsil '18 played well at second base and hit a triple. Zach Eckerson '21 was solid at shortstop. Chris Londal '21 had the game tying RBI.

Golf - First Girls'
May 9: Golf - First Girls’ 1 vs Ethel Walker School 4
The Martlets hosted Ethel Walkers for a match on the back nine of Hop Meadow on a beautiful day. With some reshuffling of the lineup, the Black and Gold knew that they would have to find their rhythm early to compete against a solid EWS squad. Unfortunately, the mojo just wasn't there as the team fell 1-4 in match play. Katie Kosior '18, however, kept her match momentum alive and secured the win at the No. 3 spot.

Other Martlet scores included Alex Biedron '18 (42), Cam Scott '18 (41), David Harris '21 (41), Charlie von Stade '21 (47) and Wes Oltsch '20 (44). With the exception of Oltsch who parred the final hole, all others got a double bogey or worse but still managed to produce very solid numbers on greens that were very slick and hard to read.

Lacrosse - First Girls'
May 9: Lacrosse - First Girls’ 14 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 13
First Girls’ Lacrosse extended its winning streak to three on May 9 with a thrilling victory over Choate in Wallingford, Conn. Westminster got on the board first three minutes into the first half and it was a back and forth battle for the remainder of the game. Westminster took control of draws, thanks to solid play on the circle by Blake Cote ‘19 and Greta Baker ‘19, but Choate found the back of the net while capitalizing on unforced turnovers by Westminster. The second half was a true battle and the Martlets found themselves down by two goals with four minutes left. Goalie Ellie Bailey ‘21 came up with a key save that allowed Westminster to maintain possession and captain Emma Alpaugh ‘18 put one in the back of the net to tie the game. The Martlets won the ensuing draw and played composed and disciplined attack until, with 43 seconds left, captain Emma Lange ‘18 scored the game-winning goal off a free position shot. Bailey stopped another Choate shot, and the Martlets were relentless and gritty, playing together each minute.

May 11: Lacrosse - First Girls’ 15 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 10
First Girls' Lacrosse extended its winning streak to four games after an evening game at KO on May 11. Westminster got off to a slow start and allowed four quick KO goals, but got on the board and began to work back to playing its own game. With two minutes left in the first half, the Martlets were trailing 2-7, but they turned it on and scored six goals that were left unanswered until well into the second half. This was due to strong draw controls, smart possession and great shot placement by the midfield and attack. Westminster led at the half 8-7 and went on to win 15-10. Shannon Keefe ‘19, Mikaila Lupoli ‘20, Georgia Swank ‘19, captain Emma Lange ‘18, Blake Cote ‘19 and captain Emma Alpaugh ‘18 scored goals.

May 12: Lacrosse - First Girls’ 14 vs Canterbury School 11
The Martlets continued their winning streak by bringing home a W on their Senior Day on the last game on Hovey Field for the season. It was a cooler, rainy game and the Martlets, yet again, had a slower start than they had hoped, but they picked it up and played their game amid some uncontrollables and remained poised through it all.  Goalie Ellie Bailey '21 came up with big saves and defender Greta Baker '19 was a threat coming out of the defensive third while Blake Cote '19 was tremendous on the draws, adding 10 for a team high. Cote also had three goals and two assists. Georgia Nolan '20 added three goals of her own while captains Emma Lange '18 and Emma Alpaugh '18 were stellar in the attack adding four goals and three goals respectively.

Lacrosse - Second Girls'
May 9: Lacrosse - Second Girls’ 8 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 8
Second Girls’ Lacrosse took on the Wild Boars of Choate on a gorgeous afternoon. The Martlets struck first when Katy Maxon '18 drove to goal after getting a strong feed from Campbell Swift '21. The field tilted in favor of the Boars for much of the first half as the Martlets had trouble establishing their offensive flow. Goalie Lizzi Cronin '21made several keys saves in the first to keep the score close at half with the Martlets trailing 3-5. After a quick pep talk, the Martlets played with more finesse and a healthy dose of grit to take control of the game. Celia Sotirhos '21 buried a free position shot and later had a nifty put-back of a rebound to score two in the second half. Natalie Fay '19 dominated the draw and scored once. Maddie Dwyer '18 netted two, Maxon had one goal and two assists, Ella Varano '21 grabbed one and Sophia Gasser '18 drove home a beautiful quick-stick to round out the scoring for the day. While the Boars tied the game within the last minute, the Martlets dominated the second half with their smart play.

May 11: Lacrosse - Second Girls’ 6 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 8
The Martlets expected a challenge when they arrived at Kingswood Oxford. The weather was beautiful and the competition tough. Westminster scored the first goal early on but the Wyverns came back to tie up the game. Katy Maxon '18 scored a second goal and, again, KO came back to tie it up. Near the end of the first half, Mia Stevens '18 transitioned the ball up from the defensive end into the attack where the team worked together to complete beautiful passes. Annabelle Smith '21 placed a bounce shot in net making the score 3-2 going into the second half. Rebecca Sargent '20 scored and Maxon scored two more goals in the second half, however, the team fell short of KO.  The Wyverns drove hard to goal and managed to score six more in the second half, making the final score a tough loss of 6-8.  The team worked well together, using strong passes and doubling up on the ball.

Lacrosse - Second Boys'
May 9: Lacrosse - Second Boys’ 7 vs Berkshire School 9
It was a fine day for lacrosse, as Westminster donned its blacks to fend off the Berkshire Bears. The first half was neck and neck, with both teams inching ahead to 4-4 at the close of the half. Outstanding hits by both Jack Roberts ’20 and Daniel Pinckney ’20 were complemented by sharp shots from Riley Wood ’19, Nate Stevens ’21 and Willie Noble ‘20. As the third quarter began the Martlets stayed in lockstep with the Bears, tying it up 7-7 with just eight minutes remaining in the fourth. As the final minutes of the game pressed down on the field, the Bears nudged their way two goals ahead of Westminster, and the game ended at 7-9.

May 12: Lacrosse - Second Boys’ 17 vs Kent School 2
With reunion weekend in full swing and the boys fired up in the rain, the Martlets dominated Kent at home, bringing the final score to 17-2. Daniel Pinckney ’20 had a near half dozen goals while Riley Wood ’19 controlled the offensive plan. Khalil Walker ’19 and Ral Reyes ’21 briefly changed places, and Brendan Greene ’20 showed a few promising moments with a short stick. Most important to mention was goalie Zach Papapetros ’20 taking on the responsibility of midfielder for a game.

Softball - First Girls'
May 7: Softball - First Girls’ 11 vs Williston Northampton School 2
Gabby Nemarich '20 homered and had three RBIs and Ally Marenco '18 pitched a great game to lead the Martlets to a win over a talented Williston team. Playing before a large home crowd, Ashlee White '18 doubled and tripled for Westminster, and Emily Samar '18 had three hits and drove in three runs. Meg Cournoyer '19 added two singles. The game was scoreless after the first frame, but Westminster put together a series of quality at bats leading to seven runs in the second inning. Nemarich led off with a single, Hannah Stone '18 worked out a walk, and Mandy Busky '21 executed a perfect bunt for a base hit. Katie Neilsen '18 then walked, Marenco grounded out to score a run, and Busky slid home safely on a squeeze bunt by Cournoyer. Taylor Adams '20 followed with a run scoring single, and White then drove in two runs with a double. Samar completed the inning with a base hit to score White. There were many impressive plays in the field throughout the afternoon for the Black and Gold. Highlights included a terrific catch by Samar on a pop up behind home plate, nice work by Busky at second base, and fine outfield plays by Nemarich and Cournoyer. Marenco pitched well, allowing just five hits over seven innings.

May 9: Softball - First Girls’ 11 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 2
The Martlets traveled to Wallingford on a warm spring afternoon and came away with an 11-2 win over Choate. The Wild Boars played Westminster tough, holding a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when Hannah Stone '18 doubled and Katie Neilsen '18 singled to tie the contest. However, Choate answered in the fifth by scoring a run after Westminster had some uncharacteristic lapses in the field. In the sixth inning, consecutive hits by Emily Samar '18, Stone, Mandy Busky '21, Neilsen and Lucy Noel '18 led to a 3-2 advantage for the Martlets. Ally Marenco '18 pitched a scoreless sixth frame, and then the bats came alive for the Black and Gold in the seventh. Taylor Adams '20 walked, Ashlee White '18 singled and Gabby Nemarich '20 doubled to drive in two runs. Stone followed with her second double and scored on a base hit by Busky. Neilsen then singled to collect her second RBI of the day. Noel walked, Adams singled, and White doubled home both runners. Samar completed the scoring with a single, and it was suddenly an 11-2 game. Marenco shut down Choate in the bottom of the seventh, and overall allowed only six hits in the game. White made some fine plays at shortstop and Nemarich had some nice catches in the outfield for Westminster.

Tennis - First Girls'
May 9: Tennis - First Girls’ 9 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 0
First Girls’ Tennis managed to bring home another win, 9-0 against Choate. While the final score looks lopsided, many of the matches were quite competitive, and the Martlets performed well against competent opponents. In doubles, Lauren Way '20 and Alex Wolf '19 looked particularly strong at No. 3, winning 8-3. Way and Wolf did a nice job of playing as a team, using classic doubles strategy to dominate their opponents. Mary Kille '18 and Nat Wilson '18 got out to a strong start but had to play tough tennis to get the 8-4 win. Clara Ekholm '20 and Ellie Suit '20 were also challenged at No. 2 but pulled out the 8-6 win. In singles, Kille took little time to win at No. 1 8-3, and Ekholm also took care of business overwhelming her opponent with her power at No. 5, 8-2. Way was calm, cool and collected playing up at No. 2. She moved her opponent around the court, and was in control from start to finish, winning 8-4. Suit at No. 3 and Maggie Chaves '19 at No. 6 each pulled out 8-5 wins, holding off the Wild Boars with steady play. And Wilson made her singles debut of the season at No. 4. Crafty as always, she picked apart her opponent's game to win 8-6.

May 10: Tennis - First Girls’ 8 vs Miss Porter's School 1
With no time to rest, the Martlets hosted Miss Porter's School and came away with the 8-1 win. The Black and Gold were particularly dominant in singles, winning all but one match. In these victories no Martlet gave up more than two games. Olivia Zhang '20, Lauren Way '20, Maggie Chaves '19 and Laura Mittelman '20 were all efficient and confident in their contests, not letting their opponents get any momentum. Ellie Suit '20 faced a determined player who seemed to get every ball back. After struggling a bit to start, Suit settled in and became more patient which brought her the win. In doubles, the Black and Gold were also dominant at No. 3 where Way and Alex Wolf '19 won 8-0. The top two doubles matches were much closer but both teams, Nat Wilson '18 and Mary Kille '18 at No. 1, and Clara Ekholm '20 and Suit at No. 2, strung together good games down the stretch to earn the wins.

May 12: Tennis - First Girls' at Kent School (Second overall)
The Martlets participated in Kent's annual deVilleFranca tennis tournament and returned to campus carrying some hardware, in perhaps the team's best ever finish. Due to rain, the tournament was altered to be an all-doubles affair, with two flights. Seven teams participated and the pairings played a round-robin format, completing a total of six matches each. In the No. 1 flight, Mary Kille '18 and Olivia Zhang '20 played together having never been doubles partners before. The Martlets earned a 4-2 record overall, winning matches over Loomis, Berkshire, K-O and Rye Country Day School. They just missed coming in second in their flight, and played impressive tennis considering their lack of experience as a duo. In the No. 2 flight, Nat Wilson '18 and Clara Ekholm '20 were reunited, having played together last season and in a few matches this season. Their chemistry was apparent as they amassed a 5-1 record, only losing to eventual winner Andover, who was in class of its own. The Martlets had a particularly good match against Rye Country Day, winning 8-6 in a tiebreaker. The girls earned runner-up honors in their flight. The combination of the teams was good enough for team runner-up honors as well, coming in second to Andover.

Tennis - First Boys'
May 9: Tennis - First Boys’ 3 vs Avon Old Farms School 4
The day was hot and the boys were excited to take on the Winged Beavers of AOF. The parent of AOF No. 1 Alex Chaho was a familiar face, having coached three of the Martlets when they were younger. Doubles was split with No. 1 and No. 2 going to AOF and No. 3 going to the Black and Gold adding to Nikola Kostic (captain) '18 and Grant McCargo's '21 doubles wins — the most on the team. In singles, the split was enough for AOF to earn a team win but Avon had to come back at No. 6 from a first set loss to claim the ultimate victory in the deciding match. Ethan Na '19 added to his team high win total with a straight set victory, while Kostic gutted out a huge win in a tiebreaker at No. 3. Of particular note was that Na's opponent at No. 2, Andrew Burke, made a particularly rare display of sportsmanship. After Na had won the match, he approached the net to shake hands as Burke moved to the ad court for the next serve. Na asked the score and both boys seemed unsure. Na returned to the baseline and played the next point out at which point Burke approached and conceded the match. He later said that Na's question had prompted him to replay the points of that last game and even though he had won the subsequent point, he realized that Na had already won the match. Coach Peter Doucette does not recall such a sequence ever occurring where an opponent, having played on, reconsidered and conceded a match. It is a tribute to Burke and Avon. At No. 5 Carl Ekholm '19 also had a straight set victory. All of the boys played well and went home happy with everything on the day except for the final outcome, which was beyond their control.

May 11: Tennis - First Boys’ 0 vs Loomis Chaffee 7
The afternoon was full of anticipation for the boys as the seedings for the Southern New England Tennis League Tournament were out and a number of the match-ups hinged on the outcome of the day's matches. Loomis was talented and deep, consistent and smart. The Martlets were tenacious but not as consistent under pressure as the Pelicans. In doubles, all of the matches were 3-8. The Loomis serves were big and made the boys work to get rallies started. The play was competitive even though the scores were decisive. In singles, the two highlights of the afternoon came from the play of Grant McCargo '21, playing up at No. 3. In his second set, McCargo relaxed and played his best tennis of the season going blow for blow with his senior opponent. McCargo only lost by one break in the second set. At No. 2 Ethan Na '19 seemed poised to take the second set when he was up two breaks, but his opponent came storming back with big serves, great running gets, and beautifully soft volleys on many balls hit right at his body. Na and McCargo stood out, but all of the boys played their best tennis as has typically been the case this season.

Tennis - Second Girls'
May 9: Tennis - Second Girls’ 5 vs Choate Rosemary Hall 2
The Martlets won a nail-biter on May 9, narrowly defeating Choate 5-2. Mia Poling '18 and the doubles team of Jacq Autorino '20 and Rosy Sieglaff '18 both won their matches in very close tiebreakers.

Tennis - Second Girls’ 6 vs Miss Porter's School 1
Westminster managed to swiftly defeat the fighting daisies on a beautiful evening. Everyone played well, but the doubles team of Susannah Van Leuven '20 and Klaudia Khegay '19 had a particularly strong showing.

Tennis - Second Boys'
May 9: Tennis - Second Boys’ 5 vs Kingswood-Oxford School 2
Captain Ashton Howey '18, playing perhaps his most inspired tennis of the spring, staged a furious comeback at No. 1 singles to close the door on a game Wyvern team from Kingswood-Oxford. Westminster raced out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. They were led by Charlie Crowther '21 and Scott Lee '20 at No. 2 doubles who out lasted their opponents 9-7. Also victorious was the team of Max Torrez '18 and Michael Fiorini '18 at No. 3 doubles. At No. 4 doubles, the duo of Ryan Lee '18 and Zach Tarazi '18 won handily, 8-3. In singles play, Cam Jury '19 won by playing a clean brand of tennis with few unforced errors, 8-3. Nate Chaves '19 also cruised to victory on the hot and noisy outdoor courts, 8-4. Kingswood responded with victories at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, and the score stood at 3-2 in favor of Westminster with two matches still in progress. With Howey trailing 3-6 and James Chun '19 locked in a close battle at No. 5 singles, the Martlets needed to win one to seal the deal. Howey, a Sixth Former from Branford, Conn., did not disappoint. He unleashed a wicked backhand and clever and consistent groundstrokes and volleys to wear down his opponent. His final game featured blistering passing shots and a feathery, drop-volley winner. Chun, not to be outdone, also persevered. Westminster would walk away with a hard-fought and satisfying 5-2 victory to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Tennis - Third Girls'
May 9: Tennis - Third Girls’ 0 vs Rumsey Hall School 8
After a long hiatus, Third Girls’ Tennis traveled to Rumsey Hall on a warm and sunny spring afternoon. The girls played six of the eight matches in the indoor courts, which was a new experience for most. The highlight of the afternoon was the loss in a tiebreak by Siena Holowesko '21, playing at No. 3 singles. It was tough in the other four singles matches and the three doubles matches; the points that went Westminster's way were few and far between. The remaining singles players were No. 1 Jennifer Jerand '19, No. 2 Eda Chen, No. 4 Annie Brewer '21 and No. 5 Christina Zahringer '20. In doubles, Izzy Bailey '21 and Mairead DeFronzo '20 played No. 1 singles, Chloe Ferro '20 and Lizzy McCoy '20 played No. 2, and Tatum McBreen '21 and Elena McGuigan '21 played No. 3. The girls demonstrated a tremendous amount of grit, having to play higher on the ladder with the loss of two teammates to the AP exam. They also exhibited a great deal of grace, earning the upper hand in sportsmanship on the courts.
