Boys End Season with Incredible Swims

The curtain fell on the 2017-18 season at the New England Championships on March 3, held at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, but not before the boys mustered one last assault on their best times with an inspired team performance. Just getting to the meet was a challenge, as winter storm Riley blocked bridges and buffeted the school vans as they made their way to the meet. Once in the water, the Martlets were amazing, shattering personal records and earning spots in the finals. Co-captain Matt Norris '19 was the top scorer for Westminster, earning a second place finish in the 100 Fly (55.38) and fourth in the 500 Freestyle (5:09.75). Co-captain Albert Gao '18 was fifth in both the 200 (1:54.70) and 100 Freestyles (52.14) with best times. Every time Emmett de Kanter '19 hit the water he swam a personal best, punctuated by a victory in the B final in the 100 Freestyle (53.89) and a five-second drop in the 200 Freestyle to 1:58.60, good for 10th place. De Kanter also led off the 200 and 400 Free Relays, swimming lifetime best splits in each of those. Co-captain Teagan Stedman '18 finished 11th in the 200 Free and 12th in the 100 Free, both with best times, and Hudson Stedman '21 lowered his best times in the 200 IM and the 100 Fly, earning seventh place in both of those events. J-C Lane '21 finished 12th in the 200 IM and 10th in the 100 Back, both best times, and Daniel Pinckney '20 took 10th in the 100 Fly and 14th in the 200 IM, both personal bests. Kieran Haug '21 was eighth in the 500 Freestyle and 12th in the 200 Free, and David DeFronzo '19 swam personal bests in the 50 and 100 Freestyles. Justin Schuster '19 also swam best times in the 50 Free and 100 Breast. The 200 Medley Relay Team of Hudson Stedman, Hayden Cathcart ‘18, Pinckney and DeFronzo took sixth, the 200 Freestyle Relay Team of de Kanter, Teagan Stedman, Norris and Gao placed fourth, and that same foursome placed fifth in the 400 Free Relay, all with outstanding splits. The meet was a fantastic finish to a super season, and the team is grateful for the leadership of Sixth Formers Cathcart (who also took sixth in the diving event held on Feb. 28), Gao and Teagan Stedman. The coaches congratulate them on their successful careers and the bold stamp they put on their final performances. It was a great job with a fine finish, Martlets!
