Martlets Face Skilled Rumsey Squad

The Martlets Third Field hockey team traveled to Rumsey Hall School to take on their field hockey team for the second time this season. After the last game, they knew that we were going to have to come ready to play with lots of energy to defeat the skilled Blue Dogs. Westminster started off a little slowly, specifically having trouble connecting the ball from the midfield to the forward line. Defenders Autumn Prete '16, Julia Carter '16, and Abby LeBlanc '17 did a good job holding their ground in the circle, but Joanna Beach '16 had a spectacular day in goal with a total of 13 saves- seven in the first half and six in the second. A few minutes into the first half a Rumsey offender drilled the ball from the top of the circle and it quickly found the back of the goal. After the first half, the Martlets decided that they needed to focus on communicating as well as cutting for the ball on hits coming out of the circle. A subsequent time out helped us to really iron out any confusion, and the girls put on the pressure for a few minutes. Abby Newman '16 did a great job of switching the field in the midfield, while Erin Gorham '16 and Rachel Halfon '16 really picked up the tempo by cutting aggressively and effectively to the ball. The Rumsey offense had many corners/scoring opportunities, and they tallied two more goals in the second half off of a breakaway and a strong hit coming from the top of the circle. Westminster had two scoring opportunities and a couple of corners, but could not finish. In order to finish up strong, the next few days will be spent going back to the fundamentals and having a great last two days of practice before taking on Hotchkiss at 3 PM on Saturday at home. The girls look forward to leaving everything out on the field in their last contest of the season!
