Martlets Pull Out The Win

Westminster traveled to Loomis to battle the Pelicans of Loomis Chaffee. The teams were evenly matched in the beginning, each earning offensive corners in the first 10 minutes. Defender Autumn Prete '15 was able to clear Loomis shots out of the circle and midfielder Nicole Fox '16 helped transition passes from Prete up to breaking Westminster forwards. With just 7 minutes left in the half, forward Abby Newman '16 broke the tie by collecting Erin Gorham's '16 rebound and slipping it past the Loomis goalie. Maggie DeDominico '16 and Rachel Halfon '16 worked hard on the right side of the field to pressure to Loomis defenders. Annie Hicks '17 and Nadira Abdilahi '16 each had scoring opportunities, but the Loomis goalie was able to clear their shots. During half time, the team discussed that one goal would not be enough to guarantee a win against a hard working Loomis team. Westminster was put on their heels in the beginning of the second half as Loomis earned 3 straight corners. Defender Evie Pope '16 was the flyer and her strong stick deflected any Loomis shots on goal. Goalie, Joanna Beach '16 had a great energy and directed her teammates as they defended the corner. Eventually, Westminster was able to turn the tides. Abby LeBlanc '17 cleared a ball to Julia Carter '16 who transitioned the ball all the way down the left side of the field with a beautiful push pass. Midfielder Lily Mahoney '17 collected the ball to space and shot on the Loomis goalie. The rebound came directly off her pads, but Newman was challenging the cage with her stick down and was able to redirect the rebound past the Loomis goalie. As the clock ticked down, Loomis picked up the pressure, but defender Elena Lie-A Cheong '17 was composed and able to channel her opponents off the sideline. It was a close game and an exciting one for visiting parents to take in. The team should take some time this weekend to relax and reflect on how far they have come this season!
