Slow Starts For Martlet

The Westminster girls had a slow start in their game against Deerfield. Whether it was because of the long drive up north, or the gloomy weather, or the knowledge that they were playing with only one sub, the girls struggled to find their stride until well into the first half. Even under these circumstances the girls found a way to play their game. Rachel Halfon '16 had a strong first half, filling in spots of the field that were lacking and hustling to the ball. Julia Carter '16 was a force to be reckoned with as well, stepping up to the ball consistently and challenging Deerfield's offensive line. Abby Newman '16 played fantastic field hockey up and down the field, controlling her hits and not letting any ball get past her. After Deerfield scored their first goal, our offensive line responded accordingly. The Martlets had many shots on net, including one from Annie Hicks '17, which missed the goal by an inch. Nadira Abdilahi '16 also had a shot on goal, which would have scored if not for a previous foul. After halftime, Westminster was ready to play. The Martlets kept the ball moving, and did a great job of controlling it. Unfortunately, Deerfield got ahead in a few moments during the game, and scored two more goals, ending with a score of 0-3. The coaches are so proud of the girls, as they played until the very last minute of the game, and were flexible when they were pushed to try new positions on the field. The team hopes that this loss will only benefit them in upcoming games.
