Martlets Have Great First Game

After a very long bus ride up 91 north caused by Big E traffic, the Martlets stepped off of the bus ready to play their first away contest. They quickly began to warm up with determination and excitement for the game that had to be postponed 15 minutes due to the late arrival, but they stayed positive (even with the steady sheet of rain that began to fall). Westminster spent the first ten minutes of the game getting the kinks out, which then allowed for a display of some beautiful field hockey. Every girl was active, each pushing herself no matter where she was on the field. In the first half Cali Stevens '17 took the ball to goal, after receiving it from Ellie Klein '16 in a controlled scramble in front of the net. Within the second half we scored two more goals, one which was tipped in by Lily Mahoney '17 after receiving the ball from Stevens. Mahoney's placement on the post is what led to this goal, which is something the team has been practicing all week! Within the last 30 seconds of the game the Martlets received an offensive corner which they took with confidence and composure. This led to a goal by Dora Mitchel '17 in the last 5 seconds, assisted by Madie Bologa '17 from the endline. Throughout the game there was strong play by both the midfield lines and defense lines, as they communicated with each other and controlled the play. Autumn Prete '15 played up and down the side line with a steady and patient stick, which always got the call for the Martlets. Julia Carter '16 was quick to recover and step to the ball, which was a great support to her team and her midfield line.
