Martlets Out-Hustle Eaglebrook

Blue skies and cold, gusty winds greeted the visiting Martlets when they got off the vans at Eaglebrook. Despite the shortest warmup of the year, Second Boys' Lacrosse defeated Eaglebrook 12 - 8. The Martlets scored in the first 5 seconds and then traded goals to end the first quarter with a 5 - 4 lead, and the half with a 7 - 6 lead. Eaglebrook tied the game late in the third, but Westminster pushed its lead to two on a huge goal by George Brown '15 from an assist from Eli Zempsky '15 with 8 seconds left in the third quarter. Eaglebrook fought back to get within 1 goal in the fourth quarter for their last time as the Martlets scored the last 3 goals of the game and effectively controlled the last 4 minutes of the game. As is usually the case in a win, the Martlets out ground balled Eaglebrook 45 -32, out shot Eaglebrook 30 - 22, and lost the save battle 8 - 14. Game captains Angel Guerrero '12 and Brennan Cross '15 got the team focused and ready for the opening whistle and for the second half, despite a limited warm-up. Co-Game ball winners Ryan Seymour '14 (4 G 2 A and great riding) and Drew Poling '13 (4 G and great FO work) led the Martlets in scoring, but were helped by Lorin Tobey '15  (3 G 2 A), Sam Pope '12 (1 G), and the already mentioned Brown (1 G) and Zempsky (2 A). Patrick Holwesko '12 made 8 huge saves and helped on the clears. The Martlets get a well needed and deserved day off Saturday and begin anew on Monday in the attempt to play its perfect game.
