Martlets Return To Play

On an unusually mild November day, fully two weeks since their last game due to the recent storm, the boys traveled to Kent for their next to last game.  They put in a strong effort against a talented side with some very dangerous players.  Possessing the ball better than they have all year, the Martlets did a good job of keeping Kent's speedy striker from doing any damage in the early going.  When he finally found an opportunity on the left flank he made the most of it, freeing himself for a shot that was stopped by Drew Poling '13 but created a rebound that was driven home for a 1-0 Kent lead in the ninth minute.  The defense kept the Lions at bay for the remainder of the first half, with excellent work done by Greg Pietroforte '12, Will Stevens '12 and Amory Beldock '12.  On the other end the Martlets were able to get several nice services into the Kent box, and Stan Sandoval '13 was able to take a couple of dangerous shots, but the Kent tally held up at half time.  Despite a good start to the second half, Kent was able to add two more goals early, countering quickly after turnovers and finishing well.  The Black and Gold came closest to tallying in the 51st minute, when a Sandoval cross found the foot of Vincent Gisonti '13 just beyond the penalty spot; his blasted volley went just over the bar.  Sandoval himself would take several more good shots in the remaining minutes, one of which sailed just wide, but the boys would not find the net on the afternoon.  Additional quality play was turned in on the day by Greg Jarvis '13 in midfield and Lorin Tobey '15 on the flank.  This group has never given up all season, and they will no doubt fight to the end during Saturday's final contest at home against Brunswick.
