Martlets Make Good Effort To Dig Themselves Out Of Trouble

The Black and Gold played their best soccer of the year thus far, but could not overcome a slow start in falling to a skillful Pomfret side.  The visitors struck twice in the first six minutes, first by getting on the end of a low cross from deep in the corner, then two minutes later surprising the back line with a quick through ball after a turnover.  Stunned by the turn of events the Martlets were scrambling for much of the first half as Pomfret continued to press, but toward the end of the half the passes started to string together in bunches and the defense tightened.  With a chance to regroup at the intermission, the second half saw even better chances for the home side as the action went end to end.  In the 74th minutes a beautiful 35-yard strike from Greg Jarvis '13 soared over a surprised, outstretched keeper to draw the Martlets within one, setting up a final sixteen minutes of intense action, mostly in the Pomfret end but not without some dangerous counterattacks.  In the end the comeback fell short, but the boys again demonstrated the kind of grit that will bring them success.  Co-captain Jake Crow '12 was strong in goal again, co-captain Stan Sandoval '13 was dangerous in attack, and strong performances were turned in by Cory Latour '12, Colin Cross '12 and Ben Shively '14 on the flanks.  The boys will look to take the next step with games on consecutive days midweek against Williston at home and Kingswood.
