Martlets End With Good Effort

Despite a tremendous effort, Westminster fell short in their attempt to deny Avon an undefeated season, as the strong Winged Beavers wore down the depleted Martlet squad and took home a victory.  Westminster fell behind 2-0 early on two fast break goals by Avon, but they were able to turn things around when Patrick Spano '12 worked hard to get a ground ball, passed to Greg Jarvis '13 who dodged two defenders and then fired a pass to Charlie Niles '14 who fired it past the Avon netminder.  It remained 2-1 through half time and it looked like the Martlets would have a shot to win this one thanks to the tremendous defensive play of Brooks King '12 and Dietrich Ryan '12 and the stellar goaltending of Austin Pope '14 who made a number of dazzling saves to keep the game close.  Nevertheless, Avon was able to pull away, scoring four goals in the third quarter.  The Martlets did not give up, however, dominating the fourth quarter, and scoring in the closing minutes on a girtty individual effort by attackman Morgan Heck '14.  The game ended 6-2, and while Westminster was disappointed to lose, the team left the field with their heads held high, proud of their valiant effort against a very strong opponent.  Congrats to Avon on their undefeated season.
