Martlets Rebound Against K-O
Coming off a 10-2 thrashing at the hands of rival Avon Old Farms, the Third Boys' Lacrosse team bounced back in a big way with an inspired performance earning them a victory over Kingswood-Oxford's JV squad. The team came into this match-up with a brand new game plan, and stuck to it for forty minutes, and while this certainly played a role in the victory, no game plan is effective without effort, and effort in abundance is what the Martlets displayed during this win. Westminster scored first on a drive from the midfield by Greg Jarvis '13, and would never fall behind during the game, although K-O did tie the game twice, the first time making it 1-1 just before the end of the 1st quarter. The Martlets would score again off another drive from the midfield, this time by Elliot Gilford '11, and this gave them a 2-1 lead going into half time. The defense was strong in the first half, and was anchored by captain Brooks King '12 who had a number of takeaways in limiting K-O to one goal in the half. Goaltender Austin Pope '14 also added a number of strong saves, and his hustle on wide shots resulted in a number of Martlet possessions. Midway through the 3rd quarter K-O scored on a fast break, and the teams went into the 4th quarter tied 2-2. With five minutes to play the Martlets found themselves in a "man-up" situation, and although the Man Up unit had struggled all game, the got it done when it counted as Jarivs fed Charlie Niles '14 cutting to the net on the left side, and Niles beat the K-O goalie catching the ball, and quickly firing a bounce shot past him. The last four minutes of the game went back and forth, but the Martlets dug their heels in and held on for a tremendous victory.
