Martlets Topple Exeter

In the first round of the Westminster Invitational Tournament, the Martlets earned a hard fought victory. Exeter, having just beaten Cushing, is playing very well and is off to a good start this season. While both teams started slowly in the first, the Black and Gold had more chances as Emily Walsh ‘09 and Sara Ugalde ‘10 flew down the ice, creating a number of opportunities but could not convert. The Exeter goaltender was up to the task. In the second, Westminster seemed to lose their energy, and Exeter outshot the Black and Gold 16 to 8. Fortunately, Kayla Lessard ‘08 was a brick wall. In the third, Westminster rallied and played very well. The team started connecting on passes, and the legs were a bit less heavy. Nicole Fox ‘10 and Marianne Specker ‘08 both played very well in the period. Ugalde scored on a deflection off of an Exeter stick. Next, on a great break out, Bethany Dymarczyk ‘08 passed to Specker to Walsh who had speed to attack the net. She sniped a top corner over the goaltender’s right shoulder. Tori Pizzuto ‘10 added an empty-netter to seal the victory. On Saturday at 3:00, Westminster plays Kent for the second time in this young season.
