Martlets Fall to Bearcats

The team was excited to be in a brand new large coach for the drive west to Lakeville. The day was cloudy and bright with a slight breeze. Utilizing 9 courts the teams were able to play all seven matches simultaneously including two exhibitions. The #2 doubles team of  Edie Goodyear ‘28 and Lulu Dawson ‘27 had the best showing of the day. At #1 doubles Lake Carter ‘28 and Pippa Jervis ‘28 had to face a girl with a rocket serve that resulted in numerous aces and service winners. #3 doubles lasted the longest with Candice Hong ‘28 and Karen Li ‘28 forcing many deuces. In exhibition singles, Angelina Mertz ‘29 faced an opponent who was unleashing “bullets.” Mertz relished the challenge. The other exhibition pitted Harriet Leventhal ‘26 against a top player who was playing exhibition after returning from injury. Leventhal was quite happy to have played perhaps her best tennis of the season. Similar comments were made by Georgia Ursano ‘28 and Clara Covill ‘26. Ursano notably used both sides of the court very well, but her opponent was able to run most of the shots down. Emily Fonner ‘26 had to move up to #2 singles and played well against a very precise player. Scoring the lone point for the Martlets was Co-captain Avery Gray ‘26, whose gritty play brought out accolades from some of the Hotchkiss fans. Gray’s relentless gets and early tactical lobs and passing shots were enough to secure a solid win.

Grit & Grace award split with Grit to Gray and Grace to Mertz.
