Martlets Finish with a Road Win

It doesn’t seem like that long ago the 2025-26 season began with a home game against Berkshire. The Bears came out ahead 7-6 that day in a closely contested battle. This afternoon, Westminster finished its season by traveling to Sheffield, MA for round two of the series. The Martlets turned the tables this time, soundly defeating the home team, 7-4. The Black & Gold came out flying, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first period. The message for the day was simple: play sound defense and shoot the puck. Nico Filippetti ‘29 opened the scoring by capitalizing on a pass to the slot from Mason Moritz ‘28. Just two minutes later, Will Gallagher ‘27 fired a one-timer into the back of the net from the top of the circles. Jordan Pham ‘27 recorded the assist on the play. A tripping penalty left the Martlets shorthanded with just over a minute remaining in the period. Finishing the frame with a 2-0 lead would have been just fine. However, Ty Lambert ‘26 and Arthur Lilley ‘27 each scored in the waning moments. Lambert’s goal was a seeing-eye shot from center ice meant to clear the puck. Somehow the shot slipped past the Bears’ netminder for a 3-0 lead. On the ensuing faceoff, Lilley pressed the Bears in their own zone, leading to a turnover that eventually found its way into the net with barely a second on the clock. Berkshire would not go quietly, though, scoring two goals just 20 seconds apart early in the second period. Knowing that a two-goal lead is the worst in hockey, the Martlets buckled down and rattled off two of their own in short order to restore their four-goal lead. Teddy Russell ‘26 bounced the puck off the back of the goaltender for an unassisted tally from below the goal line, while Winston Caracappa ‘28 scored yet another goal from the slot on Moritz’s second assist of the day. Berkshire cut into the lead again as the second period expired, but the boys felt pretty good about their chances for a victory going into the third with a 6-3 lead. It took just under two minutes for the 6-3 lead to become 7-3. Henry Norton ‘29 improved his goal-scoring streak to three games, beating the keeper low glove side. Berkshire scored one last time, making it a 7-4 final. Nate Teong ‘29 and Derek Waddell ‘27 split the duties in net for Westminster, each coming up with saves when the team needed them most. A special shoutout to our seniors playing their last game today—Teddy Russell, Jack Doherty, Luke Zappia, Nick Lopriore, and Ty Lambert all represented the Black & Gold well throughout their respective careers. And a final acknowledgement to the Westminster parents and fans in the stands this afternoon. Thanks for making it feel like a home game! The boys appreciate all the support throughout the season.
