Martlets Fall to Kent

Competing without their #1 player, the girls came up just short against the Lions of Kent. The close team score belies the fact that all but one of the individual matches was decided by a 3-0 score. Kent’s very strong top three offered no quarter to their Martlet counterparts, while Westy’s 5-7 players (Chase Hager ‘26, Natasha Johnson ‘27 and Anna Min ‘27) were equally dominant in their wins. What turned out to decide the team contest was the match at #4 played by Emily Fonner ‘26, and it was a doozy. She took the first two games with her signature combination of drops, drives, and creative shotmaking, but her opponent found her range and started landing some shots of her own to take the third game. Fonner fell behind in the fourth, but recovered to even the game at 10-10, but could not finish the comeback and eventually fell in five ((8), (6), 3, 10, 6). The match gave the girls a taste of what they can expect next weekend at the High School Nationals in Philadelphia, as that tournament typically presents tight match-ups and tense, exciting matches. They might even get another crack at Kent, who will be playing in the same division.
