Martlets and Saints Tie in New Milford

The Westminster Martlets faced off against the Canterbury Saints today in New Milford in a highly competitive matchup between two teams playing strong hockey. Canterbury entered the game as one of the top teams in New England, while the Martlets have been playing excellent hockey since returning from break. Both teams showed why in a fast-paced, well-played contest that ended in a 1–1 tie.
The first period featured strong play at both ends of the ice, with each team earning power-play opportunities and generating quality chances. Both goaltenders were sharp from the opening faceoff, and the game remained scoreless after one.
The pace picked up even more in the second period, and the Martlets were rewarded for their pressure when Gus McGarvey ’26 broke the deadlock. After taking a great pass from Owen Burke ’26, McGarvey skated in and beat the Canterbury goalie short side high to give Westminster a 1–0 lead.
The Martlets carried that lead into the third period and played an excellent, disciplined period, but Canterbury was able to tie the game with just under two minutes to play off a broken play in the corner.
Caden Weichselbaumer ’28 was outstanding in net for the Martlets, turning aside 44 of 45 shots and making several key saves to preserve the lead late and force overtime.
Neither team could find the game-winner in overtime, and the hard-fought contest ended in a 1–1 tie, a result that reflected the quality and competitiveness of both teams.
