Martlets Defeat Trojans

1/14/26
Third Boys Hockey
Westminster 7, Simsbury High School JV 3

Following a difficult start to the season, the Martlets finally cracked the win column. Despite some recent roster attrition and illness impacting the lineup, the boys in black jumped out to a first period lead on unassisted goals by Will Gallagher ‘27 and Mason Moritz ‘28. Henry Norton ‘29, assisted by Adam Heffer ‘29, added to lead, making the score 3-0 before the visiting Trojans could get on the scoreboard. Scoring in the second period was limited to an unassisted goal by Teddy Russell ‘26, who had drawn what looked like a hooking penalty, but carried on the with the play and tucked one home before Simsbury could gain possession. The third period showcased the most scoring of the night, as well as the greatest loss of composure. An otherwise positive evening was marred by a few selfish penalties. I wish I could say that it was uncharacteristic of this group, but there are still lessons to be learned by some members of the team. Eli Heffer ‘29 was the impact player of the period, scoring two goals just 1:15 apart. Simsbury made a late push with two goals of their own, just 44 seconds apart. Any nervousness surrounding a potential comeback was quickly set aside when Andrew Sala ‘26 scored his first career goal to make the final score 7-3 in favor of the Martlets. Overall, the win was an excellent team effort, with solid performances up and down the lineup. Notably, all three goalies combined to stop 36 of 39 shots. Ryden Maeda ‘29 led the charge, with Derek Waddell ‘27 taking care of the second period, and Nate Teong ‘29 closing it out. Next up, Westminster welcomes Salisbury for a matinee start on Saturday afternoon.
