Martlets Fall to AOF

The Martlets opened the new year on the road against the Winged Beavers of Avon Old Farms. Avon opened the game on a quick 9-0 run and the shots never fell for the Black and Gold. Liam Hibbard ‘27 broke the ice scoring the first points on the line, and his perimeter defense helped slow down Avon’s run, but the Martlets trailed 38-7 at the half. There were encouraging moments after the break. Brody DiBeneditto ‘26 turned in one of his strongest halves of the season, attacking the basket with purpose and earning trips to the line. He led Westminster with seven points on the day. Beckett Long ‘29 made his presence felt defensively with a pair of well-timed blocks, and Aidan O’Callaghan ‘26 added a soft, high-arching basket that drew appreciative nods from the bench. In the end, Avon’s shooting and overall athleticism proved decisive. The lesson now is a familiar one. With three games awaiting next week on a home stand, the Martlets will need a short memory and a steady focus, qualities every young team must learn as the season unfolds.
