Martlets Fall to BB&N

The Martlets hit Hovey Field for the first time this season in a hard battle against BB&N. Westminster had a strong start, carrying over their energy and effort that they displayed in Tuesday’s practice. For the first few minutes of gameplay, the Martlets controlled the game, but BB&N was able to strike first. The first quarter was an overall strong one for the Martlets, but the Knights did a good job executing on their opportunities, causing a 1-0 deficit following the first 15 minutes. The Martlets continued their strong play into the second quarter and about five minutes in, Junior, Catherine Knauf, got the equalizer! Knauf hit a great ball from the top of the circle that found its way through the traffic in front and into the back of the net! Excitement erupted through the Martlets bench! Unfortunately a few minutes later, BB&N would regain the lead to make it 2-1.

As the Martlets entered the second half, they worked hard to find the back of the net, but ultimately, BB&N was able to strike next. Their 3-1 lead took the wind out of the Martlet’s sail and the lead quickly rose to 4-1. Once the fourth quarter began, the Martlets played with determination and were able to maintain possession creating quality chances. Just about half way through the final quarter, Junior, Kate Epke, picked up a rebound in front following a corner play leading to the Martlets second goal of the game! This fourth quarter goal from Epke gave the Martlets a glimmer of hope for the following minutes. Although the Martlets kept pressing, BB&N capitalized once more to bring the final score to 5-2.

Despite the loss, Westminster delivered a strong team effort and demonstrated growth throughout the match. The Martlets moved the ball well in transition and created several quality scoring opportunities, converting twice. Defensively, Westminster held their ground through long stretches, with key stops and resilient play in the midfield. Returning players Catherine Knauf ‘27, Ellie Larrabee ‘27, and captain Pippa Jiranek ‘26 were key players on the defensive side of the ball today. There were plenty of positives to take away from the performance, as the team continues to build chemistry and sharpen its skills heading into our next game this Saturday at home against NMH. The Martlets' determination and hustle were evident from start to finish, setting a solid foundation for future success.

Our Grit & Grace player of the game goes to Ellie Larrabee ‘27! Ellie set the standard of Martlet Field Hockey today with her hustle, effort, and compete on the field. Ellie led the way for an overall strong performance from our back end!
