Martlets Fall to Bears

The Third Boys began their season in early December with a road trip to Berkshire School. The resulting 9-1 loss was a far cry from the boys' progress since then. Westminster closed out their season with a home game this afternoon versus those same Bears. While the 8-4 final did not favor the Martlets, it was an exciting affair that featured two significant momentum swings. The first period was evenly played, with both teams benefitting from excellent goaltending and generating several good scoring opportunities. Westminster broke through for the game's first goal with a power play tally at the 8:43 mark. Lorny Goodyear ‘25 banged home a rebound in the crease following a well-placed wrist shot from the point by Jeffrey Niu ‘26. Despite two additional power play opportunities, the Martlets entered the first intermission up only 1-0. Whatever was said on the Berkshire bench clearly got them going for the second period, as it took them only seven seconds to tie the score. The momentum heavily favored the Bears throughout the second period. They scored the next five goals and took a commanding 6-1 lead late into the third period. Undeterred, the Martlets fought back with three goals of their own in a span of 90 seconds. Trailing 6-4 with just over a minute and a half to play, Westminster pulled the goalie in favor of the extra skater. The Martlets moved the puck well and generated a few shots but could not hold the zone. Berkshire scored an empty-netter and added another 5-on-5 goal for good measure. Goal scorers contributing to the late rally were Teddy Russell ‘26, Will Gallagher ‘27, and Cooper Kraus ‘25. Despite the difficult loss, the Martlets have much to be proud of this season. They worked hard individually, played hard for one another, and represented the names on the front and back of their jerseys exceptionally well. Congratulations to our three seniors who finished their Westminster hockey careers this afternoon. Lorny Goodyear, Finn Seeley, and Cooper Kraus led with Grit & Grace all season.
