Martlets Fall to Cheshire Academy

After playing a close game in the second round of the holiday tournament at Ethel Walker, the Martlets were eager for a Friday night rematch against Cheshire. From our first meeting, we knew that limiting our opponent’s two best players would be critical. Unfortunately, the Martlets were only successful in slowing down one of the two. Lilly Murphy ‘25 and Delia Lockwood ‘26 did an outstanding job on the defensive end, denying Cheshire’s post player any good scoring opportunities while Kaitlyn Buda ‘27 collected several crucial defensive rebounds. Our guard combination of Lauren Neuman ‘25, Parker Perillo ‘26, and Gianna Monaco ‘27 worked hard to contain the opponent’s quick guard, but her speed and strong finishes helped Cheshire get out to an early lead. On the offensive end of the floor, the Martlets found some open looks against the zone, but struggled to knock down these open shots. Undeterred, Westminster continued to battle and eventually cut the lead to 7 off an elbow jump shot from Delia, assisted by Gianna. Throughout the second half, Lauren and Gianna helped keep it close by converting in our transition offense and knocking down open shots. However, the Martlets were not able to overcome the early deficit and fell to the Cats for a second time this season. The Martlets will now take the weekend to rest up before a three-game week, starting with Loomis on Monday.
