Westminster Emerges With Hard-Fought Victory Led by Chaves '19 and Na '19

Trailing 2-3 with two matches still on court, the Martlets were barely holding on. One more loss and the match would be decided. However, as the sun was setting on what turned out to be a beautiful spring afternoon, and after over three hours of tennis, Nate Chaves ’19 and Ethan Na ’19 remained on court and continued to battle their opponents. Chaves had won the first set and dropped the second 2-6. Up a set, Na led 5-4 but quickly surrendered the lead. Fortunately, he would go on to win his second set in a tie break and even the score at 3-3. Chaves, meanwhile, trailed 4-8 in the third set super tiebreaker, fought off two match balls and clawed his way back to even the score at 9-9. He surged ahead and prevailed 11-9 to seal the win. Earlier in the match Westminster earned the critical doubles point led by Azat Mukhametkulov '19 and Carl Ekholm '19 at one doubles, and Grant McCargo '21 and Na at two. Ekholm would go on to win his singles match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 with steady, consistent play that has been his trademark in the last several matches. Next up, the team heads to the Northwest Corner for the SNETL tournament on May 11.
