Gators Beat Martlet In First Half Surge

Westminster traveled to Greenwich to face a talented Greenwich Academy squad. The draw was problematic at first and GA capitalized on those wins by scoring two quick goals to start the game. Westminster took some time to settle into its own play and spent a significant amount of time on defense in the first half, but Sam DeLeo ‘21 stuffed one in the back of the net for the lone Martlet goal of the first half. Goalie Ellie Bailey ‘21 had some nice stops, particularly when a Gator from GA was coming straight into the 8m undefended. The Martlets decided to leave the first half far behind them, during which they trailed 11-1, and turned it on for the second half, scoring the first three goals of the second half to shift momentum. Captain Blake Cote ‘19 was critical in transitions in the midfield and causing turnovers in the defense. Captain Georgia Swank ‘19 was Westminster’s all-around threat during the game, playing with grit and putting two in the back of the net herself while being double teamed in the GA 8m. Despite coming up short in this game, the Martlets have the opportunity to play five more games together and prove their grit, grace, high level of play, and heart.
