Sixth Formers Learn to Build Their Professional Future with LinkedIn

On a warm May morning, Armstrong Atrium was filled with well-dressed Sixth Formers gathered to receive a professional headshot for their LinkedIn profiles during the third annual LinkedIn Day program. Photographer Kirsten Sala P’26 generously volunteered her time to take headshots, and following the initial photo session, students convened in Sejong Lecture Hall for an engaging program on career networking, the power of mentors, and how to create a professional digital presence using LinkedIn.

The session began by highlighting the significance of developing a professional online presence before entering college or the workforce. LinkedIn was framed as a vital tool for cultivating mentorships, securing internships, and building a network that grows with each stage of life. Students learned that potential employers often Google candidates—where LinkedIn is one of the first results—and that a polished, up-to-date LinkedIn profile can make a powerful first impression.

Two guest speakers—a current Martlet parent and a Westminster alumnus—helped bring these lessons to life with a blend of personal experience and practical guidance:
  • Chris Greco P’28, a partner at a major international law firm and Wake Forest Law graduate, shared how LinkedIn can inform hiring processes and business development. He spoke on the importance of evaluating the appropriateness of LinkedIn connections, how to seek out and maintain mentor relationships, and what elements of students’ career experiences and personal accomplishments should be included in their LinkedIn profiles.
  • Alexander Cardia ’21, a recent Bowdoin graduate and an analyst in infrastructure lending at a real estate investment firm, advised Sixth Formers on navigating professional connections through the Westminster community, offered tips on interviewing, and described strategies for success in the current job market.
Sixth Formers were also encouraged to join the Westminster Alumni Network on LinkedIn to make the most of their meaningful connections within the extended school community. The program concluded with an additional opportunity for headshots and time for students to talk and connect personally with the guest speakers.
