2024–2025 Fourth Form Public Speaking Contest

The 2024–2025 Fourth Form Public Speaking Contest brought engaging energy to the Werner Centennial Center, as students from Todd Eckerson’s historic Civic Engagement class presented their speeches to a full audience of peers and faculty.

Drawing on months of preparation and instruction, participants delivered speeches that were well-organized and rich in rhetorical devices, humor, and personal voice. The speakers were evaluated by a panel of faculty judges on a variety of criteria, including confidence, volume, eye contact, body language, thesis clarity, and overall connection to civic engagement themes.

Abbey Cirelli '27 was named the winner of this year’s contest. In a witty and relatable speech, she shared the struggle of coming up with a good idea, likening it to endless overthinking and false starts. From failed poetry contests to comical wardrobe crises, it highlighted the messy reality of creating something meaningful. In the end, she impressed on her audience that sometimes, "having no idea" is the best idea of all.

Honorable Mentions were awarded to Gianna Monaco '27 and Melody El-Amin Stewart '27 for their thoughtful and memorable presentations. With spirited performances that demonstrated the power of persuasive speech, all the contestants left a lasting impression—affirming the value of civic voice and the impact of meaningful public expression.

Long time faculty member and creator of this impactful series, Todd Eckerson said “In its current iteration, this was the 10th Annual Fourth Form Public Speaking Contest. I thought the finalists put on a great show!"
