Black and Blue Cup Returns to Simsbury

The Martlets hosted the Hotchkiss Bearcats yesterday for their home opener in the rivalry “Black and Blue Bowl” matchup.

Westminster came out firing, quickly taking a 3-0 lead after the first quarter. The Martlets extended their advantage to 4-1 before Hotchkiss responded, battling back to even the score at 4-4 heading into halftime.

Despite the Bearcats carrying that momentum into the third quarter and taking a 7-4 lead, the Martlets remained calm and composed, learning from their past experience against Rivers on Saturday. Staying focused on execution at both ends, Westminster answered with a pivotal sequence: Gavin Bulger ’27 swept across the top right-handed, drew the slide, and moved the ball to Luke Rodrigues ’27, who quickly fed Hudson O’Hanlon ’28 in the lefty pocket. O’Hanlon would not be denied to make it 7-5 and ignite the turnaround. That goal sparked a decisive six-goal run for Westminster.

The defense clamped down on Hotchkiss, led by Thomas Blouin ’26, Gardiner Ely ’26, and standout goalie play by Gus Sciortino ’27. Finn Williams ’26 was outstanding between the lines and on the wings, while AJ Kraus ’26 dominated at the faceoff X in the second half, winning 10 of 11 draws and consistently generating offensive possessions. Hotchkiss would not score again, and the Martlets secured an all important Founders League team victory, 10-7.
