Martlets Swept in Tri-Match

Unfortunately, the ride home from Avon Old Farms was not as celebratory as it was two weeks ago, as the Martlets suffered dual losses at the hands of both AOF and Choate.  The highlight of the afternoon was both matches played by Zach Li ‘27, who battled back to 2-2 from a 0-2 start against both opponents to lose a very close game 5.  We started the “tri-match” against a very strong Choate squad, losing in straight 3-game matches at every position except #6 (Zach’s game).  Then after a minimal rest, we hopped right back on to play an AOF squad that clearly wanted payback for their loss two weeks ago.  Both Alessio Suarez ‘28 and his opponent from last time had advanced to the #1 position, but Alessio was unable to grab a victory in this rematch, with his opponent playing very solid squash, with barely an error across 3 games.  Sam Jiang ‘28 had similar trouble at #2, while Daniel Frid ‘27 and Tyson Mertz ‘27 brought home the two wins of the day — Daniel in 4 games and Tyson in a quick 3 games.  Sean Tang ‘28 got off to a solid start, but his opponent was really able to adapt in the 3rd game, and ultimately Sean fell in 5.  Though the outcome was not what we might have hoped, the team all supported one another, and everyone fought until the end.  We’ll grab onto that positive spirit as we head into our final two matches of the season — next up, Loomis-Chafee at home.

Grit & Grace Award:  Zach Li ‘27 unquestionably gets the award for today’s match.  As noted above, he was the only player to go past 3 games against Choate, battling back from losing the first 2 games to take it to 5, falling 9-11 in a stellar 5th game.  Exhausted after that, Zach hopped back on the court to again fall 0-2 to his opponent from Avon, and again battled back to 2-2 before ultimately falling.  In both matches, he refused to give up, and was a model of perseverance and spirit.
