Martlets Shutout by Loomis

A great turnout at Jackson Rink tonight for a Monday night matchup against a talented Loomis squad. As the teams walked onto the ice, the stands were filled with students while families, faculty members, and friends lined the boards to await puck drop. From the start, Loomis set the pace, but Westminster played smart and simple to limit the Pelicans chances despite their constant pressure. Eventually, Loomis was able to notch their first of the game about seven minutes into the first period. From there, they would add two more before the buzzer to make it 3-0 at the first intermission. The second period was similar for the Martlets. They spent a lot of time in their defensive zone and found themselves down a player multiple times which added to the Pelican’s momentum. Defensively and on the Penalty Kill, Westminster worked hard but had difficulty containing Loomis’s attack, which was both persistent and effective. The Pelican’s ability to score in various situations, including even strength and power play, made it a challenging night for Westminster. Overall, the Martlet’s continue to work on their areas for improvement while also acknowledging the “no quit” effort they showed tonight. The group worked hard and now have their eyes set on the annual Harrington Invitational Tournament this weekend before having a well deserved break for the holidays. The Martlets kick off the tournament with two games on Friday against Lawrence Academy and then Noble and Greenough, both at Nobles.

Our Grit & Grace player of the game is Junior Goaltender Liesel Kocourek. Although Liesel could not suit up for the game today, her positivity and encouragement off the ice played a big role for the Martlets.
