Martlets Fall to Pomfret

During a Friday Night Lights matchup, Westminster and Pomfret delivered an intense and competitive field hockey match that ended with Pomfret edging out the Martlets, 3-2. Westminster opened the game with a strong first quarter, controlling possession and generating several chances, but the scoreboard remained even at 0-0 after fifteen minutes. Early in the second quarter, the Martlets broke through. Stella Spitz ‘27 sent a bouncing ball into the circle, and Chloe Corneau ‘29 was in perfect position to finish, putting Westminster up 1-0. Midway through the quarter, however, Pomfret responded with an equalizer, sending both teams into halftime tied at 1-1. The pace picked up in the third quarter, with both sides pushing hard. Westminster struck first again, with Stella Spitz ‘27 delivering another bouncing ball into the circle. After a series of quick touches, the ball found its way to Kate Epke ‘27, who fired a shot that was smartly redirected by Gigi Filippetti ‘26 to make it 2-1. Unfortunately for Westminster, Pomfret answered swiftly, scoring twice more before the end of the third quarter to take a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame. Despite a determined and gritty effort in the fourth quarter, Westminster couldn’t find the equalizer. The Martlets fought until the final whistle but ultimately came up just short in a hard-fought match.

Our Girt and Grace players of the game are Chloe Corneau ‘29 and Pippa Jiranek ‘26. Chloe delivered the Martlet’s first goal and was a spark for the offense tonight, while Pippa’s relentless effort led the way for the Martlet’s.
