Martlets Fall to Hotchkiss

The Martlets hosted Hotchkiss on a windy and cold Wednesday afternoon. The conditions were not pretty for tennis(or being outside), but the Martlets were prepared and ready for battle against an always tough squad from Hotchkiss.
Starting slightly later, the doubles matches were lined up and sent out for a full warmup with their opponents. The Martlets battled hard up and down the ladder but came up short in all the matches played. Crosby Cutler ‘27 and Xavier Kahn ‘27 had some nice points in their competitive 8-3 loss at #1 doubles. Similarly, William Jones ‘28 and calvin Bixby ‘28 played some competitive games with great points in an 8-4 loss at #2 doubles. Caden Cramer ‘27 and Rohan Satpathy ‘27 also battled hard in their 8-1 loss at #3 doubles, while Khang Ngo ‘27 and Tyson Mertz ‘27 also played a competitive match in an 8-4 loss at #4(exhibition) doubles.
The martlets faired the same in singles as doubles, but played some great points throughout.
Daniel Frid ‘27 and Xavier Kahn ‘27 faced tough opponents at #1 and #3 singles respectively, falling in straight sets. Sonny Darnowski ‘28 played a great first set at #4 singles, but ran out of steam in his 6-4;6-0 loss. Jaime Escartin ‘27 dropped the first set quickly, but extended the rallies and played some long games in the second set. Although he dropped it 8-6 in a well played tiebreak, his effort was well noticed and his Bearcat opponent had to work for the win. Jeffrey Niu ‘26 also had a competitive match at #5 singles, after dropping the opening set he dug in and forced his opponent to play many extra balls. He extended his second set past 5-5 before falling 2-6;5-7. Finally, last on the court was #2 singles Crosby Cutler ‘27 who played a great match against a strong and hard hitting opponent. Crosby matched him shot for shot in a competitive 6-4;6-3 loss, but played some of the best tennis I have seen him play in 2 years of coaching him. Issac Kwon ‘28 and Connor Gray ‘26 played competitive exhibition matches, also won by Hotchkiss. The Martlets return to the court this weekend when we take on Salisbury at home, on what looks to be a sunnier and warmer day on the hill.
