Martlets Defeat Taft

The Martlets headed down to Taft on a chilly Wednesday afternoon. The game opened with a goal from Bella Zapata ‘27, assisted by Piper Lundin ‘26, and Taft responded to tie the game at 1. Chase Hager ‘26 provided the next goal, followed by Ella Hammel ‘28 with a beautiful behind-the-back shot (assisted by Bella Zapata ‘27) to bring the score to 3-1 after the first. Taft opened the second with two straight goals, but Bella Zapata ‘27 added another to reclaim Westy’s lead at 4-3 heading into halftime. Thanks to great work from the defense, Taft scored once during the third, resulting in a 4-4 tie entering the fourth quarter. In net was Mimi Salman ‘26, who made three huge saves during the fourth. It was a back-and-forth quarter and with less than a minute left, the score was even at 7. Bella Zapata ‘27 won the draw at 19 seconds and took it down the field, earning an 8-meter. With three seconds left, she beat the buzzer and secured an 8-7 victory for the Martlets.
