Martlets Fall to Pelicans

The rematch from last Saturday’s 11-3 victory at Loomis unfortunately didn’t go the Martlets’ way this time. The boys battled back twice from deficits to tie it through the first five innings, and then took the lead in the sixth after Paul Coccaro and Lucas Steniger both walked to start the inning. Coccaro later scored after two wild pitches brought him to the plate. Michael Rossi also walked to put runners at first and second with one out, but two ground ball outs ended the inning without adding any insurance to the lead. Loomis then responded with a leadoff triple, two doubles, a walk, and a single to take a 7-4 lead into the last half of the seventh inning. The Martlets put up a good fight in their last at-bat - Eli Heffer led off with a single to right field, Adam Heffer reached on an error, and Eli later scored on a wild pitch, but three strikeouts in the inning sealed the win for the Pelicans. Kareum Skovron-Rasheed, Steniger, and Tyler Beaudoin had the other hits for Westminster, and the team racked up 9 walks and 13 stolen bases in the game. The Martlets will be back in action on Monday, April 27th versus Brunswick at home on Osborn Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:45 pm.

The grit and grace award goes to Kareum Skovron-Rasheed who returned to the mound after rehabilitating an arm injury, and he pitched better than his stat line will show, as he was much more efficient but didn’t get the defensive support that he deserved. To his credit, he stayed positive with his teammates and focused on the next pitch - controlling the controllables.
