Martlets Fall to Berkshire

Despite some hard-fought matches, concluding with a 5-game win at the #3 position by Alessio Suarez ‘28, the Martlets were unable to grab the victory from Berkshire.  In addition to Alessio, Daniel Frid ‘27 won a decisive 3-game match at the #5 position (despite taking a racquet to the face!).  Other highlights included Rafa Rodrigues ‘28 fighting through 5 games at the #7 spot, and #4 Tyson Mertz ‘27, who kept his opponent on his toes, with two of the 4 games ending in an “overtime” 13-11 score. And at the #1 spot, after a marathon 14-12 second game, Andrew Ma ‘27 went down fighting in 5.  We also had two exhibition matches today, with Gid Williams ‘27 and Elijah Woodard ‘29 — both making their first appearances at a JV match.  Though Gid lost in 4 games, he did a fantastic job of picking up on his opponent’s weaknesses and working to use that to his advantage, while Elijah showed a lot of heart and perseverance despite losing in 5.  All players did a great job of trying to keep their opponents in the back court, taking advantage of weaknesses and moving in for a winner when the opportunity presented itself.  With 5 of the 7 “official” matches going to 4 or 5 games, the 2-5 loss was closer than the score might suggest.  We look forward to taking the courts again against Salisbury in the coming week.

Grit & Grace Award:  Daniel Frid ‘27, for hopping back on the court after taking a hard racquet swing to the face — and winning his match in a decisive 3-game sweep!
