Martlets Fall to AOF

Westminster had the opportunity to open its season with a match against the coed squash club at Avon High School, led by a talented, nationally ranked player who proved a tough one to beat.  With our #1 player having been called up to the Varsity squad for the day, the JV boys each faced a formidable opponent and showed some real grit on the court.  Avon won two quick matches at the #1 and #3 positions, while Zach Li ‘27 made short work of his opponent at #5, winning 11-6, 11-4, 11-3.  Sean Tang ‘28 and Daniel Frid ‘27 each battled it out to 5 games, ultimately succumbing to talented opposition.  Although Gid Williams ‘27, who was called up from the 3rds squad, lost in 3, he hustled down every ball and kept working until the very last point, forcing his opponent to 13-11 in 2 of the 3 games.  The highlight of the match was sophomore Rafa Rodrigues ‘28, who, after falling behind 2-1, really focused on consistency and taking advantage of opportunities that came his way to win back the final two games.  Though the match ended in a loss for the team, there was some real heart shown on the court, which is a great way to start the season.

GRIT & Grace Award:  Rafa Rodrigues ‘28, for battling back from a 2-1 deficit to take 3-2 victory.  Rafa took each point one at a time, focusing on the fundamentals of his game, particularly hitting deep rails and keeping the T with volleys when possible.
