Martlets Fall to Choate

The Martlets traveled to Choate for their first match of the season. The opening half favored our side, thanks to strong defensive efforts from Brooks Berthiuame ’27, Maruli Sianturi ’28, and Jordan Pham ’27. Their ability to hold their shape while pushing forward and recovering into space was executed with discipline. Adding to this momentum, Justin Fu ’27 used his remarkable speed to dominate the field and apply constant pressure on Choate. With the ball moving into attacking territory, forward Teddy Russell ’26 found space and launched a shot on goal. Though initially stopped by Choate’s goalkeeper, he quickly regained control and converted the rebound, scoring the first goal of the season. His opener elevated the pace of play, intensifying the challenge for both sides.
In the second half, Steven Lau ’28 brought energy as the second forward, driving the ball upfield on multiple occasions and creating opportunities for the team. Despite this, Choate managed to equalize early in the half, raising the stakes. Our players responded with determination, and Jeff Niu ’26 delivered a long-range strike from the right wing to reclaim the lead. The match grew even more intense when Choate answered with a similar effort to tie it once again. Hudson O’Hanlon ’28 showcased excellent dribbling and field vision, helping the team maintain cohesive play. Still, Choate’s persistence and tactical execution allowed them to edge ahead with another goal late in the match.
The Grit and Grace Award was presented to Brooks Berthiuame ’27 for his outstanding defensive performance and consistent pressure throughout the game.
