Martlets Fall to Knights

Proud coach after today’s loss. Having only been practicing for five days and facing a seasoned team in Salisbury, the Martlets showed a lot of grit today, and as these boys gain more experience and confidence, growth will follow. After being down 5 runs after the first inning, the boys showed their fight and clawed their way back one pitch at a time to make it 8-11 after six innings. The Knight’s starting pitcher was formidable, but the boys were selective in their approach and put together long at-bats to run up his pitch count. After scoring two runs off of him in the fourth inning on a Matthew Polastry single down the right field line, a Salisbury error, a Tyler Beaudoin single to right field, and a dropped third strike, the Knights made a pitching change. Westy added seven runs over the next three innings to threaten but didn’t quite have enough for a full comeback. Massimo Guarnieri, Kareum Skovron-Rasheed, Michael Rossi, and Andrew Haggett also collected hits. Westminster’s pitchers - Beaudoin, Lucas Steniger, Eli Heffer, and Adam Heffer did well to throw a lot of strikes and challenge the Salisbury hitters; Beaudoin and A. Heffer pitched scoreless innings in their appearances, Steniger struck out the side in the fifth and Heffer struck out two batters in the sixth. The Marlets only committed one error on the day, with Rossi and Guarnieri making nice plays in the infield and Dylan Ness and Matthew Polastry getting putouts in the outfield. The Martlets are back in action on Saturday at Eaglebrook; first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
