First Boys' Hockey edge Avon Old Farms in thriller on the road

In front of a standing room only crowd the Martlets were able to steal a crucial 2 pts on the road. Avon Old Farms, pumped up by their rowdy fans, jumped out to a 1-0 lead early by capitalizing on a power-play. Westminster stormed right back into the game with back-to-back goals by Joey O'Connor '16 to put the boys up 2-1. Connor Lloyd '16 converted on a great pass from Cal LeClair '17 to extend the lead to 3-1 before the end of the first period. The second period would see both teams take a number of penalties, and the Winged Beavers took advantage, scoring two goals to tie the game up. The final frame, knotted at 3-3, was simply a great prep school hockey game, with both teams exchanging scoring opportunities. The game-winning goal came from Mike Ventricelli '16, who was relentless in front of the net and put home a rebound with many Avon players around him. Nick Sanford '16 had a strong third period and finished the game with 32 saves, and the Martlets staved off the Winged Beavers in a classic for a 4-3 win.
