Martlets Can't Overcome Avon Defense

The Martlets had trouble beating the AOF defense in Saturday's 3-1 loss at Avon. Although the Martlets had a few chances on offensive through balls, offsides and speedy Avon defenders dwindled the opportunities. Westminster fought hard all game and they were able to notch a tally when Will Schmidt '13 chipped a shot over the Avon goalie's head in the second half. The score was not enough to overcome a three goal deficit, but it showed resiliency and determination. Alastair Smith led the defense playing solidly in the backfield. He was joined by other strong defensive performances by Preston Miller '13, Nick Aube '14, and Gage Kennie '13. Ryan Seymour '14, Riley Bitterli '14, and Derek Leydecker '15 did a nice job getting the ball up-field to attackers Quan Lu '12, Miguel Castello '13, and John Vantine '13.
