Disappointing End To A Good Season

Second Boys' Hockey, missing six players due to injury, hosted Deerfield in the final contest of the season.  Despite outshooting their opponent 15-3, the score ended in a 1-1 tie after the first period. Nick Crosby '10 assisted by Oscar Ladd '11 and Hunter Spannaus '09 got Westminster's first goal after dislodging the puck from a pile up in front of the Big Green net. Deerfield scored a second power play goal in the second period (they had eight chances on the day) to go ahead 2-1. Midway through the third period Martlet forward Sam Stanton '10 got the equalizer from Kirby Zdrill '09 and Ladd. Unfortunately, with 4 minutes remaining the Westminster defensive corps made an overly aggressive play in neutral ice that led to a Deerfield breakaway and a game winning goal. Deerfield added an empty net goal with seconds on the clock. The Martlets played hard and well in this losing effort outshooting their northern opponents 37-24. The 2-4 final score didn't reflect competitiveness of this game. It was a disappointing end to the season but the team came a very long way learning to play stronger defensive and team hockey. A sincere thank you to the five Sixth Former skaters for their significant contribution to the Westminster Hockey program -- Carson Christman (AC), Charlie McGwire(AC), Conor McGovern, Joe Putko (AC) and Captain Brian Smith -- you will be missed.
